Thermal Paste on a P4

Hey everyone, i just recieved my dell proprietory heatsink and ducting, but its obveously been removed once.

What kind of thermal paste should i use??

I have some antec reference, and some regular generic white colored thermal paste.

A local pc shop told me the generic paste was much better then anything with silver in it.

Also, ive never applied paste to a p4, do i apply the paste to the entire chip face, or do I just put a dab in the center? (ive seen p4 heatsinks that only concentrate on the center, with a thiny pad for the center)

Thanks.

the person at your local pc shop is an idiot...as5

EDIT: spread the paste thinly across the entire surface of the chip...be sure not to get any on anything conductive though...and remember, less is more when it comes to thermal paste

Artic silver says to put just a dab in the center and use the hs weight to spread the past out. Granted, I don't do this and have never had bad temps...but thats what they say to do

Just to confirm... the person at your local pc shop IS and idiot.

If this is your second application of thermal paste to the cpu and heatsink make sure they're very well cleaned, and none of the old paste is on either surface. It might help to use a little iso alcohol too.

are there any software programs for me to monitor my system and CPU temps? This mainboard is the intel board that comes with a Dell Inspiration 4600.

Sisoft Sandra should do the trick. There are others but I don't use them
