i have a core 2 duo e8500 at stock speeds right now with the stock intel hsf.

my temps right now at low load are 52C (core0) and 42C (core1). should there be such a large discrepancy in core temps because 10C seems like a lot.

i bought a xigamtek 1283 and it came with some thermal paste. is this fine or is there better 3rd party thermal paste, which would keep the cpu cooler?

The thermal paste that came with it is fine to use. If you are wanting every last bit of cooling you can get,... then some compounds will give you a 1-2 degree difference, but unless you are overclocking to the extreme and still having heat issues it really wouldn't matter one bit.

10 degrees between cores doesn't sound right - are you sure you got all four pushpins on the HSF inserted all the way?

all 4 pushpins are completely in. i'm gonna use the vertical line method of applying thermal paste when i put the 1283 heatsink on.
