The one on the heatsink is small doesnt cover every where on the cpu.

, but the one that was on the heatsink, though small, does "melt" and end up covering most (probably all) of the CPU.
When applying paste, to a large extent, less is better. Too much paste is counter productive. You only want enough to fill in the grooves on the CPU and the heatsink, not a thick slather.
