Thermal pads vs. thermal paste

So I got an Accelero cooler for my 4870X2 last week hoping to get rid of the crazy loud stock cooler it comes with. Unfortunately the cooler is defective, only 1 of the 3 fans works, and needless to say it's performance is less than stellar without all 3 fans going.

While I am RMAing this cooler I'm going to put the stock cooler back on my card, and I was wondering if it would work any better if I replaced the thermal pads on it with thermal paste?

As long as the cooler makes sufficient contact with the chip, I would use thermal paste. (cheaper and better). Also, you may want to consider using a non-conductive thermal paste, like MX-2, so that you dont short out the card if it gets on anything else.
