Hello there,
My Sapphire r9 290 has failed, after more than a year of dedicated, hard work. I can RMA it, since it's still in warranty.
The problem is that I had to remove the stock cooler in the past to use an aftermarket cooler, and in the process I stained the original thermal pads and in my attempt to clean them I got them torn and even worse when tried to reshape them.
I learned that Sapphire, unlike other brands does not cover a warranty after the removal of the heatsink; thus condemning anyone who 'd like to use any aftermarket cooler, or waterblock...
Unwilling to lose my 450$ worth of my warranty, I ordered from ebay green thermal pads 1mm, but they are too green ;p, thus I resorted to buying akasa 1.5mm ones, though they look too thick; any ideas how to slim them down? As for the grey ones I feel lost, since some look brighter, others darker and others too small (used for cpus), while I need a 10cm one for the long array of VRMs and besides I don't know how to differentiate the elastic ones (like the ones used on the VRAMs) from the crumbly ones (like the ones that are used on the VRMs)?
So the questions are:
1)Does anybody know how to slim down the green, elastic ones from 1.5mm to around 1mm, like the originals?
2)Does anybody know where to find identical themal pads to the originals?
3)Is it possible to reshape, or remold the ones that I have?
4)Is it possible to DIY the thermal pads? The grey ones supposedly are based on parrafin wax and boron nitride? The greens should be silicone-based, I guess.
Thank you for your answers
