Thermal Diode vs. Thermistor: Need Experienced Help

I believe that the KT333 motherboards use the AthlonXP internal diodes to measure CPU temp. Does that reading normally read higher than the thermistors earlier motherboards use? My CPU is an AthlonXP 1900+ and my motherboard is an Epox EP-8K3A+. I am using a Taisol CGK760002 hsf with good silver thermal compound and 2 80mm rear exhausting case fans. My case temp. averages about 30C and the cpu is ranging from 45C to 48C idle and pegged out at 52C running Prime95. When I was using this CPU with a Cooler Master CB5-6G52 hsf on an MSI K7T266 Pro2-RU (KT266A with thermistor under the CPU) the case temp. was about the same but the idle CPU temp. was about 40C to 42C and pegged out also at 52C using Prime95. Thanks for any ideas you might have on this.

PS - the Taisol is quieter than the Cooler Master so I am willing to suffer with a warmer chip if the cooler is at fault for the higher temp. and not the temp. measurement instrumentation.

This question is being asked quite a bit lately, I've even heard Newegg had to change their policy to refund for exact board only because some were RMAing it thinking it was faulty

That temp is excellent! I have the 8K3A+ w/SLK-800&52cfm 80mmfan w/1600+ AGOIA-Y@1.88ghz and my max temp is the same as yours with a case temp of 33c. Considering you are using a far less radical thermal solution I'd say your in great shape ;) BTW our CPU can handle much more heat before performance degradation and failure so relax :)

What would be the max temps idle/load to watch out for on both the thermsister and the thermal diode?

oh yea, and do temps differ as you step up on the XP+ line?

I think somethings screwed up here on my machine, heres my deal:

ECS K7S5a
xp 1800+ (Stock speed right now)
Cooler Master HHC-001
Antec thermal compound

Now, SpeedFan shows my idle temp to hang around 47/48 deg. C.
Whilst running SETI (non-graphical :)) or UT2003 or Soldier of Fortune II, proc. maxes out at 52/53 deg. C.

Why is my idle temp so much higher than everyone else, then going from idle to load it gains just 4 degrees?

Or are my temps good, and the fan is really keeping the load temps under control?

Help! Thanks.

I think that is closer to the truth than anything else. Because you have such a small difference in idle vs load, you must have done a decent job with your cooling solutions; good airflow and good application of the HSF. Yes, the idle could be less, but you would have to invest more $$ to do that by getting either an AX-7, SLK800, or at least something comparable in the "higher-end" market. Personally, I wouldn't bother right now; you're doing fine. Good Job!

Matthew, I was wrong in my intial report of my CPU temps. My CPU is idling at about 48C and pegging at 52 - 54C (depends on ambient temp of the room) which is very similar to your readings. I think we are ok with our temps. as they are well within specs and our coolers are not sporting super loud Delta screamers. But I have been pondering using my 60mm Delta Black Label fan in the place of the stock Taisol fan. I will test the fan out to see how loud it is tomorrow. If I can tolerate it I will install the fan on my heatsink and monitor temps. again and report them back to this thread.

Ahh, Buzz2b, thats good news :)

Yea, I think ive done a pretty decent job of keeping my case cool (1 front fan, 1 rear fan, 1 slot cooler, 1 psu bottom suckin fan, GF4 HSF, CPU HSF), which stays at a constant 30c.

The HHC-001 is actually VERY LOUD! Its a damn screaming bitch, as i affectionately refer to it as, but it gets the job done. I think in the near future Im gonna tear my PC apart and take a quieter approach.
is it worth buying a bunch of temp monitoring fans, and that Antec PSU that has the fan connecters, and slows them down to only as fast as they have to run? When i built my dads pc I did this. I gave him my old CPU HSF too, Arkua Cooler 7528 (off Newegg). Without the CPU fan, you can barely tell the system is on. So with the CPU HSF, its still very reasonable.

I eventually plan on getting Barton as soon as it comes out. Thats def. gonna require a replacement for my HHC-001, yes? Its sad to see it go :( Is it worth the investment to gut my computer, and make it quieter?

Well, for most likely less than $35, you could get an AX-7and a reasonable fan (including shipping). You would definately notice the difference from the "screaming bitch" and the AX-7 is an excellent HS; check out the reviews. Personally, you could spend a couple of bucks more and go for a YS Tech variable speed fan w/controller knob and "dial in" as much or as little cooling/noise as you want. But you are the one that has to decide if it is worth it or not.
However, haveing said that I just went to SVC's site and they no longer carry the AX-7. Don't know why. And the YS-Tech fan has jumped from $8.99 to $12.99. Not good. Maybe my "estimate" would have to be refigured. :frown:

the lack of idle to full load movement on the k7s5a is due to socket-thermsitor readings that the ecs board uses. It doesn't read internal diode.

nonetheless, 52C load with an ECS board is quite normal, and inline with outer k7s5a readings i've noted.
