Thermal Diode - Does it have it or not??!!!!

This is, I hope, a pretty simple question: Does a AMD Athlon 1200/100 MHz (Athlon 4) have an on-die thermal diode?

If anybody have the answer to this, could they back it up with some hard evidence???

it does, but few if any motherboards support it. if you want evidence, then read tomshardware.com's processor burn up test. tom papst complains a lot about motherboards not supporting the thermal protection that the athlonxp has.

Nono I don't mean the AthlonXP. Just the regular Athlon T-Bird 1200/100 MHz.

No, an original Athlon or Athlon Thunderbird does NOT have a thermal diode.

Its not easy to find a link which specifies which features an Athlon Thunderbird does NOT have, however, this link states that the Thermal Diode is a new feature on the Athlon XP.

The last feature of the Athlon 4 is an on-die thermal diode which measures the internal core temperature, much like what the Pentium III and Pentium 4 have. This is a very important feature because now the processor can not only tell what its internal core temperature is but, if implemented properly, the processor could throttle down or even shutoff if its temperature got too high.

What does if implemented properly mean? Does it mean we have to make some adjustments on the mobo? Can't the XP shut it self down without the help of mobo ?

AthlonXp/MP thermal protection is entirely dependant on motherboard compatibility and implementation.... the XP itself has no thermal protection, it needs a motherboard that works in conjunction with it iin order to offer thermal protection.... Only a handlful of motherboards support this.

The reason for making this thread is that a friend of claims that his Athlon T-Bird 1200/100 MHz DOES have an On-Die Thermal Diode, and I really don't believe it. But he is a pretty stubbern guy (aren't we all) a he don't take no for an answer........:-( :-(

Your first post contradicts the next one. Which CPU are you talking about? An Athlon 4 or a regular T-Bird Athlon? Athlon 4's (notebook CPUs) have a thermal diode while regular ones don't.

Your friend needs to use the water pipe only for tobacco purposes.

A "non-Palomino" (ie: 1200/100) AMD CPU does NOT have a thermal diode. It relies on the motherboard.

That's for CPUs with the internal diode, which are the MP/XP chips, the Duron chips based on the Morgan core.
