thermal compound or thermal pad?

I'm building my first pc... an Athlon 2200+ on a MSI KT3 Ultra-2R.
A friend of mine mentioned that I might want to use thermal compound (Arctic Silver was his recommendation)
instead of the thermal pad that came with the heatsink (using the heatsink that came with the cpu).
Should I scrape off the thermal pad and use the compound? Does it make a big difference?
Will I notice any difference? Will it increase the stability and life of the cpu?
Any input or help is appreciated.
Thanks!

er well it can do, if you have some AS3 about then go for it, it's only going to be better than the pad.

otoh, its still only going to be a couple of C cooler, and if youre not overclocking and likely to replace cpu within a year anyway...

non-essential, but only a good thing to use better goop. For the realatively tiny cost compared to the whole system, imo its well worth it even if not overclocking - but not essential by any means. Mind to follow the instructions; probably will find a soft bit of plastic (e.g. bic penlid) and nail varnish remover and/or iso-somethingy alcohol will help you clean off that pad.
