So I was wondering, im using some arctic silver 5, and I know there is maaaany different methods, and one I was thinking is putting that pea sized blob in the middle and let it spread out over usage. So thatll work for me right?

Not pea sized, more like a grain of rice.

There is a real risk of undercoverage with a rice sized drop especially with larger IHS' and thicker compounds these days. If too much is used it will just go over the edge, no harm done.

I prefer the X method using very thin lines. (MX4) Never had an issue. :)

So if I did the grain of rice, which I meant, would that be ok? By the way, you said thicker compound, isnt arctic silver 5 the opposite of that?

Arctic Silver 5 is quite viscous. (thick/difficult to spread) Comparing to more up to date products such as AC MX-4, for example.

AS5 is definitely on the more viscous side of the scale. I remember reading that it's kinda more ideal for those heatsink with the direct contact heatpipes, because it'll tend to stay in the gaps.

AS Ceremique is quite a bit less viscous and much easier than AS5 to spread.

I for one, despise these newfangled IHS....mostly because I got so good with spreading that super thin and even layer of AS5 on exposed AMD and ATI dies. Time to go shoo some kids off the lawn now arrrgghhh....
