Best bet...nanotubes (bucky tubes) and/or graphite.

Many companies have been looking into conductive materials using these materials.
NEC has patented the nanotube/methanol battery not too long ago.

I remember reading that the conductivity of thermal compound like Arctic Silver has gotten to the point where the thickness of the layer matters more than the conductivity.

It sounds like some sort of plastic. It's amazing that it could be better than solder!
