There's something incongruous about a Buddhist nun buying RAM.

Just saw a Buddhist nun walk out with a stick of new DDR RAM. I've served a few other Buddhist monks/nuns here before. One group was buying external HDDs. Aren't they supposed to shun worldly possessions?

Yeah it's a slow day.

I don't know much about Buddhists, but I don't think they're like the Amish. I'd guess a computer's cool because it's a useful tool. I'd be a little more surprised if they bought Bioshock2 :^D

This. They are not Amish, they fly on planes and use electricity and cars and computers as well. Some even watch satellite TV.

Stuff like this makes me want to work in an adult novelty store

Where terms like "external HARD drive" and "RAM stick" take on entirely new meanings! D:

Depends on how strict they are, and most likely how strict the Wat is. Also depends on where you are... in Canada? Since most people there aren't Buddhist, it would be hard for them be as strict as if they were in a Buddhist country.

Most people aren't monks/nuns for more than a few months anyway. Buddhists will go to a Wat as a holiday for anywhere from a week to a few months, similar to how westerners go to detox or yoga "resorts".

Buddhists also believe in the impermanence of things, as far as I understand it. Sand mandalas are created by monks through many hours of work, and then simply wiped out, as a symbol of this.

What better thing to also symbolize this than a piece of memory that loses all its data the instant it loses power? :awe:

Somewhere, at some point in our future, a new generation of Buddhists will create works of art in MS Paint; at the conclusion of the ceremony, they will then press ALT-F4-N or ALT-F-X-N.

Will this stick of RAM represent the first motion toward Buddhist Future?

Maybe she was an airbender.

They have no problems using technology... then again, they are all pretty much dead...

Yeah - just as some day, Amish people will be driving around in gasoline-fueled cars.
No modern technology. Lovely. :)

At one point in time, a wheel and axle was considered high-tech machinery.

They record "sermons" and distribute them freely if you bring in your own mp3 player.

Yea, I've always wondered how they chose the technological cutoff point. They should be running around naked, and only eating raw food :^D

Isn't there a sect called the Jains.

I think at some point devout people do renounce the World and walk around naked.

Actually my mother is Buddhist so I know Buddhists don't shun technology, I was more referring specifically to monks and nuns. But yeah I know they don't either. Still it feels odd.
