F-16 and F-15 fighters are still running around...

And the carriers should be there any time, with F-14 and F/A-18 fighters joining... (early Tuesday, a pair of carriers were sent to New York Harbor to provide better top cover fighter support and better SAM support (the AGEIS crusiers provide that). At that point, they didn't know how many planes they were dealing with...

FYI, 4 American Airlines planes took off from DFW today, they took the CARE teams to the various points to look after the familes of the dead. They got special permission from the FAA and Federal Government to do it, but only after agreeing to take a pair of F-16 fighters as escorts with them. From what the local news said, the fighters would need up to 3 air-to-air refuelings to stay with the airliners the whole way, but tankers should be able to be provided for that...

My local news station also said a few of the International flights couldn't be diverted to Canada for one reason or another, and they also got fighter escort into the US and landed at military airbases...

I've got family at Norfolk and I've been told several airliners landed there. Several military airbases have as many as three dozen airliners as they were ordered to land wherever the closest place was, of any type... And I'm sure the pilots were eager to get their birds on the ground ASAP...

Yes, they do... The red is on the left side of the engine intake, the blue is on the right side of the engine intake...

The carriers might not quite be there yet, but the fighters might be running foward screens. The F-14 is designed to patrol 200 miles in front of the carrier...
