Totally - especially since as a brain surgeon you can whip out the iPhone and hit the wiki if you are ever not sure of what to do next.

Well he lives in a hospital and is thinking about being a med tech. I would imagine an old beater phone would do.

As someone who has a scary amount of education I always find these threads tragically amusing. Not all jobs require a college degree and certainly the value of a good education goes beyond mere career opportunities. None of these "wikibrains" realize that they are ignorant of the most important concept. They don't know what they don't know and they are intellectual dolts as a result.

How do you know though?

I didn't go to school and am on my 3rd career and making enough and some to support family of 6 in one of the most expensive states to live in.

Sure, your chances would be smaller if you didn't, but you can't really say for sure that you wouldn't make as much money.

I also work with plenty of Devs that never went to college and are well off.

obviously i can't say for sure, i'm not a psychic. but i think i know myself well enough to know better than you would.

i also know from your posts that you seem to be a big time penny pincher and cheap about everything and don't like to go anywhere, and think that everyone needs to SAVE SAVE SAVE! so while you can support a family of 6 which is great, i don't want that life style where i'm penny pinching and saving all of my income, and am pretty confident that i'm a bit further along in my career salary wise after almost 10 years than most of these "devs" that you claim to know who don't have a college education.

Yes I agree.. follow Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates to create billion dollar companies! it really is that easy!! everyone can do it!!

On a more serious note: the wisest thing a man can say is when he realizes that he knows knothing. Humility is key.

A lot of doctors carry around online medical books with them. They don't use wiki but they do refer to their phones when there is something they don't know.

Certainly, I use Epocrates, MedCalc/Mediquations on a nearly daily basis, however these are just tools. This is not the same as the OP's suggestion to learn everything from Wiki, not by a long shot.

School has nothing to do with gaining knowledge, and all to do about having to participate in a broken system that requires "leveling up" to be able to get a job. You have to do the grind even though it makes no sense because without all the papers you will not get a job. You also want to still gain knowledge through various sources such as books, websites, actually doing stuff etc... so that when you get on the job you know stuff.

Knowledge is not the value I got from college.

I learned to learn. I learned how to work in dysfunctional groups. I learned how to give presentations. I learned that I didn't know everything. I got to explore a bunch of different areas of interest. I networked and got to take advantage of the universities career stuff (career fairs, etc).
