I don't know why they call it a "problem". I'm fat and it's not a problem for me.
If it's a problem for anyone else, perhaps they should take the opportunity to mind their own fvcking business. ;)

I concur. I'm glad that I live in Southern California, where (at least in the part I live in) there's a general attitude to be fit and workout if needed. However, I went to Atlanta not long ago to visit family - so many obese people. Makes me sad. I'm not saying that I hate fat people ---- they're just sending their health down the drain. :(

So what? I'm not fat and (from the comments) none of the posters in this thread are fat, so why do you care? Artificially inflate the price of food to lower obesity rates? Oh great, make the poor starve... it's for their own good!

1. Lack of exercise. Americans might walk the least of any people in the world.
2. Portions of food are growing larger (this is intentional)
3. Quality of food has been steadily declining for 100 years. Less nutrients (overworked soil) and more chemicals
4. Food corporations are intentionally developing and using chemicals (food additives) that make you gain weight and get addicted to their food. Fat people buy more.

Doubt me? Try drinking only bottled water and buying only organic food for three months. See how much weight you lose and how much better you feel.

Agreed. But I think the #1 reason is 4. Exercise is an issue, but probably the least significant. All the processed carbs from soda and white flour products are converted to body fat fast and it leaves you hungry. Makes the consumer come back for more. But whole grains and water and fruits and vegs take time to digest, so you eat less and don't get fat.

have you seen the movie Super Size Me? ;)

Why does someone always bring up this absurd excuse for a documentary in food/weight threads?

Because it's an interesting and entertaining documentary.

Interesting? No.
Entertaining? Only if you like seeing someone overeat to the point where it's detrimental to their health.
Documentary? Certainly not!

I hadn't been outside the country in some time. I thought much of the talk about obesity in America was probably an exagerration. I assumed that in other Western countries it was probably the same case.

But after 2 weeks in England, it's definitely not. There are very few fat people walking around the streets of London. Those who are fat are just a bit chubby. I only saw one guy get stuck in a pay-to-use-the-loo turnstyle at a train station because of his girth, and it was an American fellow.

Getting back here, it seems like half the people are fat, and the other half are so fat they look like the Stay Puft Marshmellow man from the Ghostbusters movie. Puffy faces, limbs half as wide as they are long, and massive torsos.

You just don't notice it living here, but getting back it's all so painfully obvious. If you're a normal sized "thin" dude, it's hard to find pants that fit properly, because most stores are just stocking "baggy" and "more baggy" styles.

Cost of food definitely has something to do with it. In England, food costs two to three times as much as it does here, and the serving sizes are about half as big. It's just not economically feasible to be a lardo over there, and I'm thinking that's not such a bad thing.

I think the rest of the world is fattening us up for a takeover.

Yup.

I was making an observation the other day about portions served in restaurants... it seems that most places children's menus are enough food for me to be satisfied but not overly full. And I'm a fairly active 22 year old male.

There's definitely a trend of "More is better" with our foodservice industry. I mean, it's fine to go pig out once in a while, but people get so used to overeating that they think it's normal. It really isn't the fast food and ice cream and crap that is the main cause, although that stuff is definitely not good for you if you eat it daily, but moreso the amount of food that we eat per meal.

We occasionally order chinese food for lunch at work,I'll get one combo plate and one small appetizer, that generally feeds 4 of us.I can't believe that combo dinner is meant to feed one person.

I can eat an entire lunch combo + appetizer at the local Chinese place, no problem. And still continue to lose weight, BTW (granted I dont know what would happen if I did it every day, but it doesnt seem to dent my progress if I do it twice a week).

Granted, most people cannot do that and still eat a normal meal for lunch and dinner without packing on the fat, but I'm male, 22 years old, working 10+ hour shifts as a construction worker, and both weight training and playing a cardio intensive sport. Due to all of that, my caloric needs per day are just a wee bit higher than average ;) Which reminds me, it is time for more protein, so I'm off to get a can of tuna.

Sure, if you like intellectual dishonesty.

Care to explain?

If you've seen that scatological "documentary" and think of it as an intellectually honest film, then there is zero point in mwtgg, or anyone else even ATTEMPTING to explain how it is pure bile, and blatant propaganda.

NA is obese because of hormones in our food. Other parts of the world don't have that. When I go back to my country in Europe and eat a chicken, it tastes totally different then a chicken here, why? Because it's simply better quality meat = healthier life style and physical appearance. Obesity is growing in otehr nations true, but its still nothing compared to NA.
