There's always ONE in the family, do you have one?

I met my GF's brother 3 months ago. He's 3 years older than me and thankfully he's an awesome guy. Very kind to me, wants to hang out, and overall a very pleasant person. Due to his likability, he has lots of friends too.

But after few months of meeting him, I started to notice few things. He's not very good at life. I think this primarily comes from his parents doting him all his life as the firstborn son. All his life, he was given brand new clothes, brand new BMW (way above family's means), lump sum capital to start his own biz, and more.

He's 34 now and lives at home with his mom. Now I'll tell you this alone isn't so bad for an Asian. Lots of Asian kids live at home to save ridiculous money while working at good jobs then move out to buy homes outright. (I sort of wish I did this, my savings would be lot more by today).

After graduating college, he didn't really get any jobs. He tried his hand at starting an own business with lump sum help from his parents and failed. That's fine in itself. We all try and fail sometimes. But he also borrowed $30K from my GF that he has no intention of paying back (yes $30K lesson for my GF).

It's his ways that really bothers me. Now he's a sushi chef living with mom. He's a full adult and his small ass lawn needed mowing. He refuses to do it because he's never done it and is too busy to do so. I volunteered, no problem. But there's something wrong when GF's BF does the house work when the elder son is sitting pretty.

When GF was moving out to her dorm, a big chapter in her life, he stayed in his room and didn't lift a finger. He wasn't busy. He just did nothing. Poor girl moved all her belongings by herself in her beat up civic.

His room has its own bathroom. He NEVER cleans it. That room used to be my GF's before she moved out. It's become a filthy place and mom goes in there to clean his room and bathroom. I mean wtf man. You're 34, at least clean your own room.

He bought Mac Air for $1500 or 2000, god knows how much. All because Mac has iCloud or some crap (which PC can do). The notebook can't connect to his internet for some reason. Now the brand new notebook is sitting pretty in the retail box, past the refund date, just depreciating in value. He says he got the warranty from BB, so he'll just break it at the end of the cycle and get a brand new one. Uh, that means you're 2 grand out of pocket for no reason.

He's been seeing this girl in Korea who's 22. He also says when she comes to visit, he'll just impregnate her which will force them into marriage and live life from there. You can just see his crooked way of thinking in his life. Why would you do this?

GF is not in bad terms with family or her brother today. She has been terribly hurt because of blatant preferential treatment from parents and brother being immature. But she's gotten over it.

It's funny how the family doted him all his life to be the man of the family. And that did nothing but spoiling him. Rather the ignored daughter turned out to be the one making good money and traveling internationally. I mean shit, I'm the firstborn man in my family too. But they raised me doing fvcking yard work year-round and worked for myself since 16 doing busboying, burger flipping, etc.

For me, it just annoys me because I care about her.

I thought all those things he did were because he was an asshole.

But after dealing with him more, I realized he's not a bad guy at all. It's just.. he utterly lacks the maturity to realize his ways.

He didn't help his younger sister move out not because he was mad or douchey. It just doesn't register in his head to do such things.

He will turn out to be a loser in the long run. Eventually, he will need to grow up. He actually sounds like a huge douche I'm not sure why he even has tons of friends. They pobably like him for his money and material things rather than his personality.

Read my second post. He's not a douche on purpose.

He and his family aren't rich by any means. His family is in lower-middle class.

His friends like him because he really is a nice guy, and they're all long time friends since HS (same reason I said he's awesome when I first met him). Not a movie-case of rich popular man with shallow friends.

Whether or not you mean to be a douche, does not take away from the fact that indeed you still act like one. His sister needed help, and he did nothing, even though he could. He drives a bimmer that was handed to him, even though he can not afford one himself. Douche.

He is an asshole. Does he expect to have his mom clean his room and mow the lawn for his sorry ass? I'd avoid talking to that piece of trash personally.

A couple of my father's brothers were vaguely like that but they ended up marrying women who kicked them into shape/mostly keep them in line.

He's still a douche. His family is poor and he's mooching off them and having his mom clean his room. Guy must be a real charmer to convince you otherwise.

Some people take longer to mature. Some never do. Some get by with a little help from friends and family.

Weird thing is I am still a child inside yet I keep my shit together and I have kids.

How does the saying go?

Don't ever borrow any money you expect to see again.

She let him borrow 30k? REALLY? That's just crazy. Heck how the hell did he even have that much money?

He's still a douche. His family is poor and he's mooching off them and having his mom clean his room. Guy must be a real charmer to convince you otherwise.

He is still a result of his family misdoings.

Blame order goes
Family > him

To be honest, it's hard to be treated that way and say NO to people. Especially when it's been going on his entire life.

Just a matter of time before he learns (there is no question about that). Meanwhile, he has it made and there is no reason for him to progress in life (its what he thinks).

He is in for a shock one day.

It's hard to be mean to the guy when he's really happy to see you, calls us up to buy us dinner, wish us well as a couple, etc.

He really is likable. It's hard to let my frustrations be expressed to his face. I just vent to my GF about his ways.

Again, the word immature is the perfect way to describe him. He's like Michael Scott from the Office in a way.

usually it's the youngest brother that gets spoiled while the first son has to do all teh work.
Weird.
Asian parents utterly failed.
And spoiled people aren't that irresponsible usually.
I've never seen someone like that.

I don't know you or the guy but I get what you're talking about. I guess I'm not surprised at the assholes in this thread calling him a douche.

lol. Seriously? The guys mooching off his old ass parents and he won't even now the yard or clean his own bathroom. Calling him a douche is the nicest thing I could say about this piece of garbage.

His behavior is not going to change as long as the people around him keep enabling him.

How close is your GF to her brother? If you see a long-term future with her, it may include housing him after the parents move on.

If you're thinking of marrying this girl make it absolutely clear that you will not support him once you're married in any way, shape or form.

Yeah he's a mooch and immature but from the OP's description I wouldn't call him a "piece of garbage". I dunno, I don't know the guy personally so I guess I'll just leave it at that.

does he at least take good care of his aging parents?

Yea, such as mowing the lawn and scrubbing the filth on his bath tub. Wait.

He kept saying hire someone to do it. WTF, he's a grown man with a perfectly good lawn mower sitting around, and the lawn is like the size of 1 bd apartment.
