Is that any good? Its $30 bucks cheaper than all the other 9800pro models. What worries me is that its shorter and looks like it has less capacitors. Are the memory on those still 2.8ns? Should i pay $40 more for the red PCB version?

If any of you out there have found cheaper 9800pros plz tell me! this is for a friend and he wants the lowest cost.

It's made from the same PCB board as Sapphire's Radeon 9700 Pro Ultimate Black PCB. It's often referred to as 9800 Pro Lite. It's couple percentage points slower than true 9800 Pro but it cost like $70 less. The reason for small decrease in speed is likely due to R350 core being used on 9700 board. I believe only Sapphire has this 9800 Pro Lite.

It's not a bad value considering you're only giving up 1-3% in performance for $70 savings. This link explains it better. Text

thnks! i am an overclocking junkie, no way will i settle for second best equipment.. i guess i'll just charge my friend 40 dollars more.

Looks like a Sapphire Atlantis line card from the PCB and cooler.. I thought the 9800's used the standard 4-pin molex connector instead of the 4-pin floppy style connectors.. ?

Since it is a newegg picture link, look at the "Read the Reviews" that are posted for it. Sounds like a true 9800 PRO and the owners are happy, based on their comments.

That makes NO sense at all. The purpose of overclocking is to get more out of cheaper parts. You buy a cheaper part and get it to perform like it's pricier counterpart. YOu don't buy the best and OC it just to make some pretty benchmark numbers, that's not what OCing is about.

Did you notice it had fewer capacitors? That it is using a 9700 PCB? Its overclocking capabilities are hindered. Isn't the point of Overclocking subjective?

My friend happens to dislike the fps he is getting from HALO with AA/AF on so isn't OVERCLOCKING another alternative?

This is like saying you bought the Palimo Core Athlon 1700+ over the T-bred cuz it was cheaper. Then you tell everyone you bought it to OC

if you can't say anything nice, don't say it... im not looking for criticism

edit: spelling error 😛

Says who..you. Overclocking is overclocking, whether its overclocking budget parts for value/performance, or seeing how far you can push the envelope through modding or Overclocking the newest tech for maximum performance.

Naustica had it right - this used to be called the 9800 Pro Lite and it's only made by Sapphire with this layout. It uses a 9700 Pro pcb, runs a little hotter than other 9800 Pros because it uses the same heatsink they used for the 9700 Pro. Great card for the price if you're not into overclocking. If you definitely want to OC, get the red pcb (reference design) OEM-versions which can be found for ~$300 shipped on Pricewatch.

The picture link that started thid thread, is to newegg 14-002-304-02.jpg, a 9800 pro with the "L" memory for $305.
There is another picture at newegg, 14-102-303-02.jpj which is the 9800SE np with the in-line memory for $173.
Both are black PCBs and look similiar, but the memory is positioned diferently on each card.

The point of overclockin is to get the squeeze out the most performance out of the hardware as much as possible to see how much more you can get out of it. Its not that you buy cheaper products and then overclock them. Thats not what overclocking is all about. That's what it has become to some cheap people, but that's not the point.

Any place I can still get a Saphire 9800 Pro OEM? (Red) I just don't trust powercolor or those other taiwan brands, they all have hynix memory so i've heard.

Thnks for clearing that nebor up.. 😀 im not good at arguing..

Time to read that new anand article... OVERDRIVE! oh... i really want the XT..
