The difference between $3.34 and $3.66 on 20 gallons of gas is what... like $6.50, give or take a few cents?

Not worth my time to wait in line for. Not even once a week.

I won't wait in line, but let's put this in perspective. I am a fairly average commuter (and I commute because the homes near my office are double the price of mine - I bought a little less than I could afford and no more). I burn about 50 gallons every 2 weeks. My car has a modest 3.0L V6 (I'm gonna sell it soon - wife drives a 48mpg TDI), that gets in the high 20's per gallon (not great but not exactly an SUV).

50 gallons x 52 weeks / 2 week intervals x $0.32 per gallon increase means that my fuel cost for the year has increased by $416 if the prices remain at or near that level. That's an increase. My absolute cost is now $4,758, rather than $4,342. You cannot ignore the absolute dollars because those are real costs. And that assumes I don't take my kid to see his parents, or take any other "discretionary" trips. Knowing that we're all supposed to be mindless workerbees, that's not an issue, at least until my parents & in laws take offense when I dont return the favor so they can see their grandchild.

PS - if you're responding seriously to my last comment, get out and relax. levity - just try some.

good post. many people especially in here just worry about how much it is extra per fillup. they dont expand that out and see how much the yearly cost has just increased. I drive about as much as you and in my camry i get about 28 mpg. i have to get to work, i cant buy a house closer to work because the houses near my office are way out of my salary so i live in the sticks where i have a very managable mortage and i am not house poor.

For some people, drive less is not an option. I drive all of 5 miles to and from work. My wife on the other hand has to drive 25 miles each way. She has no option. Either she drives to work, or she doesn't work.

Could she get a smaller car? Could she get one with a smaller engine? Could she use public transportation? Could she find a job closer to work? Is the tradeoff of her finding a closer job worth the different in salary?

Sure, these are things that require long-term planning but it's not like high gas prices just snuck up on us for the first time ever.

Ah, STFU, this is America, we have the right to complain about everything, and we're not gonna stop just because it annoys you.
And why wouldn't you give a rat's ass if you have to pay more? That's just mind-bogglingly stupid; who doesn't care when they have to pay more for stuff? I will be happy to sell you gas for $7 per gallon. You don't care, right? So come buy your gas from me.

What's mind-bogglingly stupid is that people will complain all day about gas prices but aren't willing to change their lives around gas prices.

Now, that's stupid.

and what are you going to do when you pay an extra 10 bucks per grocery store visit for the added cost of fuel the trucks use to get the food to the store? or what are you going to do about it when taxes are raised to make up for the lack of tax revenue generated by fuel sales? higher gas prices has a much more reaching impact than what you and I pay at the pump.

Wait until the company can't afford the increased expenses that are caused by the increase in fuel prices and decides to lay you off and you have to go work somewhere else 20 miles away.

I gotta move out of Michigan. We are the 5th highest gas taxed state. There's no IT jobs here.

But ya, prices are ridiculous but like others have said, its only a few bucks more a week so its not really putting a HUGE strain on me at this point, but it'd be nice to take that money and put it away for a rainy day instead of pretty much throwing it away....Something has to be done though, either alternate fuel types or washington needs to do something. I wonder how much the price would drop if the big 3 only lost $1billion in profits...

Oh and I commute 35 miles each way to work cause there's just nothing near me, and I cant afford to move :(

dumbass, you will when the price of your food and groceries goes up. oh not to mention taxes going up because people are buying less fuel, and the states and feds are starting to feel the pinch from less tax money coming in from fuel sales.

Your?re the dumbass. Learn about financial responsibility. A piece of fruit goes up a few cents? it?s call inflation. It happens, ****** deal with it. Don?t live pay check to pay check fvcktard.

Because everybody has a choice, right? If you live paycheck to paycheck, go back to school and get a better job, right? There's nothing stopping you but laziness, right?

God, I'm so glad people IRL aren't like about a third of the people here.

Sure, if they want. If one person can do it, why not anyone else. My wife came here from El Salvador when she was a teenager, leaned English, did well in school, and got a scholarship to put herself thought school. I grew up in a ruff area of DC, wasn?t as motivated in school. Sure as hell don?t live pay check to pay check.

Agreed. I'll soon be the only one around my area still driving a 400+ HP vehicle. No more dealing with people trying to race past me at merges because they won't even be able to try in their 45 HP economy cars :D

I don't have any car payments, so I'm already $400+ a month ahead of everyone else on rising gas prices lol.

It's as if someone said "bring out your stupid" and you two decided to post. You do realize that the cost of everything you have is dependant on the cost of it to get to you. Your food is not grown at local grocery store, believe it or not. It has to be shipped there. It also has to be harvested, planted, watered. All of those things require oil.

I'm sure both of you will be the first two to whine once the cost of your video games jumps up, though

OP,assuming you're from the same place I am, did you notice they rolled the price back by 11 cents between 1 and 5 PM? What's that about. Did they decide they had lifted enough money from us?

btw, I saw a couple mentions of 50 gallons every 2 weeks as being an "average" commuter. I've long been under the impression that 12k is about the average a car is driven per year. 1300 gallons times even 10 miles per gallon is more miles than an average car. Far from an average commuter. Perhaps average in your local neck of the woods, but nationally? No where near average for commuting.

Yeah, when there's no face behind the words, it's amazing the things people will say. Inflation is around 3%. When you have a 30%-50% increase in price, that's a problem that can lead to a recession.

TheAdvocate, are you a lawyer? If not, you should be as you put into words my thoughts much better than I.

I can easily afford the higher gas. Money is not the issue. It's the principle. I know cheap gas is not a right. But when we're taken advantage of by oil companies, it does annoy me. I'm all for capitalism and free competition but we don't have that with the monopoly oil. I would support further breakup of oil companies.

From all the economics numbers I read and use (Michigan Sentiment, Consumer confidence), these middle class consumers haven't feel that big of a pinch.

And the fact is, if middle class have investment such as IRA and 401k that invest in stocks indirectly, their wealth increase make up more than enough for that increase in discretionary spending.

Blame it on Oilcos all you want. I'm sure bunch of guys that driving cars that yield 10 MPG has absolutely nothing to do with it and neither our government allowing those kind of vehicles being make.

Just playing devil advocate here.

I'm perfectly okay with someone playing devils advocate. I think you and I strongly differ on our perception of middle class though. Middle class/blue collar folks that I know of do not have stock portfolios and large retirement accounts (not that they could tap those without screwing themselves, so bad example, but I get your point). I'm thinking of the almost check to check types in lower end houses with a mortgage, 2 kids and a dog.

And, using specific examples is pretty pointless for either side. You can alsways find some redneck that would rather live in a moldy 30 year old trailer rather than a decent house if it meant he could keept his direct tv or still drive his 10 mpg dually (I have to be spelling that wrong) with his favorite NASCAR driver's # on the back window.

Macro trends are whats important. And what I've seen is that middle earners have already eliminated or cut many pure discretionary expenditures and are moving on to the ones I'd call quasi-necessities such as decent quality (or quantity) food and clothing. There's still some fudge room here, but every nudge upwards starts cutting closer to the bone. BTW, let's not forget that we're talking about RECORD PROFITS. I'd understand if the Oilco's were just sloughing through too, but they are seeing unprecdented windfalls with no end or justification in sight. Speculators are making a killing too, adding virtually no value to the equation but extorting huge profits.

You are not talking about middle class. If you don't invest in stocks in any form, you have no right to complain. If you are in middle class and you have -4% saving rate and your budget is so tight that there's no room to budget unexpected extra expense... TOO BAD.

Record profit and why should I care? If you own a piece of corporate America, you get that piece of profit. If you don't, too bad, its noone's fault but yours. We not running a communists' society. Or its that what you want?

And Exxon didn't just push a button to make oil price go up. There's no reason to blame Oilcos. You can blame them for not investing couple years back when oil is at $20-30 a barrel. But I can't blame them seeing it from business perspective- because it wasn't profitable for them to invest in new refinery at $20-30 a barrel when it take them $10-15 to just to get it off the ground/rig.

Noone saw this coming, thats why oilcos didnt invest in new refinery and govt didn't spring up any alternative energy programs few years back. There's noone to blame but those who have -4% saving rate and stupid spending habit.

Why?

You spend like morons and exporting emerging countries/nations benefits. As their GDP/capita increase, their usage of energy increase- causing upward demand and pressure on world oil price. Now it bite those idiots back in the arse...no investment? no saving? TOUGH F--KING LUCK.

Fixed. And correct. They dictate price to subsidiary distributors who dictate prices to C-Store operators. The last person I'd get mad at is the Kwik-E-Mart operator. He posts the dictated price or he gets none. He needs the lure of pumps to get you in the door to buy $5 twinkies and $2 sodas, so he complies.

Right, and why didn't they set the price to $60 barrel 3 years back? Why take 3 years to bring it up to current level? Why not push the button and pump the oil to $100 a barrel?
