Is this real? The way the article is written, it sounds like the author is an Apple hater and the claim sounds so outrageous, that it's hard to believe it's real, even for Apple.

The Register isn't really known for its track record. That said I could totally see Steve Jobs requesting a DNA sample of every iPhone buyer.

I could imagine this is true but even worse I can imagine a lot of people agreeing to it. But it is far too intrusive for a company

People would send in stool samples if Apple asked them to, that's what makes the fake story so humorous.

If this thread continues to be an Apple user bashing session, then I'll lock the thread. Please keep it technical.

Praise Apple, for taking such strict security requirements to prevent fraud to make-up for their software security holes.

That's not apple-bashing, right?

Would be nice if something was done, I've had accounts at FOUR different banks since the iTunes store opened up. And every single one has at least once locked my account from a few small 99 cent purchachs from iTunes. It's annoying as shit. My latest Credit Union just did this a few weeks ago to me. Wouldn't mind giving Apple more personal info if it lead to stupid banks not flagging accounts for 4 bucks worth of purchases in a day.

This is Europe too. EU makes companies do all sorts of stupid crap.

Yes, EU makes Apple act like a fucking douchebag, but only Apple. Yes, let's all witch-hunt the EU laws and regulations now, the same people who also went after MSFT and GOOG.

I guess I hit a nerve. :)

I just can't help but think of the silly thing EU made Microsoft do with the browser ballot on new Windows installs. I've heard of a few other silly things the EU makes companies do too. I don't know if this is one, so I'm just wondering out loud.

All I know is Apple hasn't done this in the US as far as I'm aware.

Source? You're aware that 'EU' legal acts are published and freely available. Mind pointing me to the relevant legal acts enforcing ONLY Apple to verify customer identification by requesting specific user information? Or perhaps some jurisprudence from the General Court? ECJ? Take your pick. Thanks.

Google "stupid **** the EU does".

I didn't say the EU is behind this, I just speculated because I think many of us have to admit EU does so some weird things over there.

I'm just sitting here in my chair speculating like the rest of us. I don't know why Apple is doing this. Why it seems to only be happening with what seems to be a tiny number of European customers. So I'm speculating there might be some sort of regulation Apple might be trying to satisfy. Other companies may not be doing this, but other companies also don't get scrutinized and villainized like Apple either. I mean Chinese factory workers start killing themselves, factory workers that make tech products for Dell, Lenovo, and many other companies and suddenly we are all blaming Apple for it. Apparently Apple is being super sensitive or proactive about customer credit card information, probably prompted by something over there in Europe. Because they are not doing this in North America or other continents.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that these are international orders from former Soviet Bloc countries of questionable reputation. The kinds of places where one could conceivably make a reasonable case for holding the purchaser's firstborn in escrow.

I'm not going to give Apple too much crap over this one.
