I was working across the street at sears and my girlfriend came in with her little cousins who was scared to death. I asked them what was wrong and they said they heard a couple of very large bangs and the buliding shook. They told me they thought it was a bomb. Anyways, I left work and went back to the place and the entire area was sealed off with police tape. The apartment complex has 8 different buildings and apparently it happened on the 2nd floor of my building, but on the opposite side from where my apartment is. The other side of the building was evacuated but apparently my side is ok.
Here is what I've been told so far. Apparently a neighbor called the police and complained about a really nasty smell in the building. The police came to the building and went to the room where the odor was coming from. The tenant said everything was fine and the cops left. A little while later there was a loud gunshot from the room. People around here think the guy killed someone and then shot himself after the police came. That's all I really know for sure. There are also people telling me that they found some kind of chemicals in the room and that's why they evacuated the south side of the building.
I'll let you guys know the full story when I find out!
Here's a news article about it so far...

UPDATE: Hazardous material team showed up so the part about the chemicals doesn't appear to be just a rumor. They have these very large "gadgets" they are wheeling around.
Nothing else has happened really. There are a bunch of firefighters, policemen, swat guys, detectives and the hazardous material guys all spread out.
Update: http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/5073306/detail.html
SAN DIEGO -- A police robot sent into an apartment complex off of Las Palmas Street has found a man laying in a pool of blood, NBC 7/39 reported.
The man was found with a gun by his hand, and the robot also found a large amount of hazardous chemicals in the bathroom, NBC 7/39 further reported. Hazardous-materials teams were to be sent in to remove the hazardous chemicals. Police would not say what the chemicals were specifically.
--I talked to the apartment owner and he said they weren't sure yet what the chemicals were; whether they were used for explosives, meth or something else. Apparently they are going to have to shut down that whole side of the building for a while though.
Update!! 10/20
Sorry for not updating earlier. Just to let you guys know, the guy that shot himself was apparently makeing ecstasy.
Also, on the night this all happened, I was handing out some bottled water and pizza to some of the people that were evacuated from their apartments. They were sitting outside for like 6 hours so I felt the need to help out. Apparently, the owners figured out who I was and delivered this gift basket to me today!

It's the "thanks a million" basket in the middle of the page. That was pretty nice of them!
