First up, we have a mixed review with minor spoilers of the Wesley Snipes suspense film LIBERTY STANDS STILL:
Wesley Snipes and Linda Fiorentino make for an interesting game of cat and mouse in LIBERTY STANDS STILL. Linda plays Liberty, a businesswoman who's husband is something of a bad guy. He's a supplier of illegal weapons (at least, that's what I was able to determine...the writing wasn't too clear). Wesley is a man on the edge. See, his daughter was gunned down recently in a crossfire by an illegal weapon so Wesley decides to take action. Through a novel approach I won't divulge, he gets Linda handcuffed to an outdoor hotdog cart outside a Broadway type theatre and has a high powered rifle pointed at her. Unless she can get her husband down here for some retribution, Wesley will not only kill her but also anyone within 50 yards of her. The cart is rigged with explosives in case she tries to flee, and the bomb is set for just a few hours when the evening performance at the theatre gets out. Chaos and lots of bodies will ensue. I haven't read the PHONE BOOTH script yet but it's quite similar in concept. The majority of the action takes place on the corner where Liberty is trapped and in the high rise across the way where Wesley is staked out. The problems begin because the scenario goes on too long. The dialogue between the two is sharp and Liberty does begin to sympathize but it starts to feel like we're being hit on the head with the concept. I'd say the movie should be no longer than 95 minutes. I mean, the action starts almost immediately but it's dragged down by it's own time length. Bottom line: It's not bad and this is a different role for Wesley that I would definitely be interested to see. Matinee, I'd say, unless the trailer just sucks, or gives way way too much away.
