Definitely agree. Liberals go goofy over GMOs because of the kids. I hate them because of Monsanto patents and farmers who want to save seed. There are rational and irrational people on the same and opposite sides of many issue. Don't forget however that it is a scientifically proven fact that when it comes to truth denial over things that offend the ego, conservatives beat out liberals. It seems you always ignore this fact. The median income for a household in the town was $22,125, and the median income for a family was $30,804. Add to it 47% of the town is black. I'm sure you can figure out the rest. Factor in the population overwhelmingly identifies as protestant (and of that, 45% evangelical) and maybe you can start to see the resistance to science. When towns have science teachers as bad as the one quoted, that should really tell you something.

Religious fervor transcends party affiliation, and like it or not that fervor usually disagrees with science. See Kim Davis for an example.

My hometown is in Southwest Virginia.

There aren't that many coal jobs left here to begin with, and the ones that are here are already jeopardized.

I can sort of understand their position in a way, as those are some of the only good jobs here for people without degrees. Heck, even for people without degrees. One of my teachers in high school actually quit his job, earning a whopping 25k, to get a job in the coal mines!


It's also one of the poorest areas in all of the US. Isn't it kind of odd how the people with the natural resources always tend to get exploited? The early coal miners were basically serfs. Not even joking...and this was during the 20th century!

So instead of rednecks what pejorative do you use for the folks in deep blue Massachusetts (e.g. Ted Kennedy) who opposed offshore wind farms there because they'd be an eyesore? Hypocrites is already assumed, so you need an equally derogatory term for them based on geography and political affiliation.

I actually don't even consider redneck to be that derogatory honestly. I know a lot of people that would consider themselves rednecks, and say it with pride. Hell, I am at least a little redneck too. I guess it's akin to the word "******"/"awesome dude", as the context matters a great deal in the interpretation. For me, the insult I was trying to emphasize was america's version of conservatism.

Though in a way, I do agree with what you are saying. There is a lot of discrimination in this country to southerners. It's one of the three last few groups you can openly hate without criticism. Southerners, White people, Men, and Fat people. Though, I think fat people are getting off the list.

It got really bad during the whole Confederate flag drama awhile back. Sweeping generalizations about southerners were everywhere.

I was watching an episode of Adam ruins everything the other night, and was kind of shocked. They declared a woman getting an unnecessary vaginal exam to be sexual assault (which I agree with), yet then claimed boys being circumcised for religious purposes to be fine. Cut off part of a boys penis, because people believed it would help stop him from masturbating in the early 1900s, or a vaginal exam?! Which is worse.... hmm...

The council not only rejected the proposal, it went a step further, voting for a complete moratorium on solar farms.

There are already 3 large solar farms completed or under construction in the area. Zoning rules were altered to accommodate them. So the people are clearly not against solar farms, despite what a couple of idiots said in an open meeting. A moratorium is appropriate at this point, imo. Three is plenty for the area available.

The science is sound. Any solar radiation not sucked up by solar panels bounces off the earth and back to the sun where it recharges the sun's core. Too many solar panels and the sun will run out of energy. We have to be careful here when messing with God's fragile design.

The solar panels bounce the energy back to the sun causing the sun to heat up even more and eventually it will reach a critical energy point in which it will instantly turn into a supernova or a black hole. Either way we are doomed!!!
