There is the rich, and then there is the filthy rich

He earned it. So let him do whatever he wants. Hell, if I had a billion dollars I sure as hell would be doing whatever the hell I felt like whenever the hell I felt like it.

Exactly.

He helped people by doing business with them - they gave him money, because his software/services made their life better, and he took the money and gave software/services because the money made his life better. It's his choice how to spend the money and so no one can tell him what he should/shouldn't do with it. He already did his part for society by making the lives of others better.

...and he pledged I think 90% of his net worth to charity upon his death. Let the man live. If he feels like throwing lavish parties, playing guitar with rockstars, buying absurd things - doesn't bother me one bit.

This. QFT.

The comments in the article are pathetic and disgusting. Wonder if those idiots realize he's creating more jobs by living this way then most of the Federal Stimulus projects?

The comments are pretty ... stupid.

Rock on Paul, 90% to charity upon death is pretty epic of him. Does he list what charities?

exactly, everything he buys and every person he pays to serve his parties benifits others. People are working/selling items because he is using his money.

Then he is giving away most of it when he dies also.

Out of all the crooks in DC and Wall Street, why pick on this genuine guy?

Because he's rich, and I have a right to tell him what to do with his money. I don't think he's using it or spending it appropriately for the betterment of society. His money could be much better spent on other things instead of what he wants. We should all be outraged I tell you. This is an outrage. I'm very outrageous.

He's got a piece in the upcoming vanity fair that's an adaptation of his 'memoirs' evidently telling the story of him and Gates from like 75-83, it's actually quite good.

He has helped numerous institutions and organizations, and some of the work those people do are helping push our boundaries as a civilization.

So he throws his cash everywhere. Well, that's better than sitting on it and not using it for much. He's putting it right back into the economy, the difference, he is able to give a lot back to an economy with a single purchase. 😛

You know, if I ever become rich, I'm fairly certain I'll end up like that guy. Eclectic is basically a defining word for me, so many interests that at this time, I cannot possibly afford to pursue. So much I'd like to do, see, and learn, but that ain't happening right now.
And there are so many ways I want to help, but I don't have the ability to draw the kind of attention to projects the way he can.

1 thing i know about allen is that he invested heavily in rcn, a competitive cable company , which apparently had the worst leadership possible . they are what's known as an overbuilder, one that builds their own system on some other gang's turf. from what i heard in the industry, while the seed money was rolling in they blew it up - everything from slick trucks to building without the final permits (and eating the fines) to meetings in hawaii.

The only thing that ticks me off about Paul Allen is that he lost his bid for the Golden State Warriors over something like 50 million dollars. Like he couldn't have just tossed that in.

Oh well, new ownership has been great so far.

why would Paul Allen try to buy the Warriors. He already has the Blazers.

You're thinking Larry Ellison. Anyhow why overbid. They(allen, ellison and others) are not rich by throwing the money away when you don't have to.

Larry still has a chance at the hornets if he wants. Though I'm sure he'd like to move them to San Jose, NBA might not want to deal with that right now with the Kings possible move creating controversy.
