Its a mouse. Traps usually work pretty fast...and the fact that you have two cats certainly won't hurt. That scratching is it trying to bore a hole, but as soon as it does, your cats will "introduce" themselves and the mice might just leave on their own.

My neighbor's had a hole under the roof in one of those perferated panels that allow moisture in and out of the attic ( I guess that's what it's for). They were broke, and on welfare, it was her, her kid and her 87 year old aunt in the house and any extra cash went for food, etc, so the roof waited. They waited too long. There was a big storm and they had a bad leak. One of the other neighbors decided to help her out and he fixed the leak, the panel under the roof, and was in the process of redoing some of the drywall trashed by the leak. He had removed the old drywall and was going to replace it with new in the morning. My neighbor goes to bed and is watching TV, and feels like "Someone is watching me". She keeps getting the feeling over and over again, even though the drapes and windows are all shut. She is about to fall asleep and she looks at the hole in the wall, and sees eyes glowing in the dark, looking at her. She freaks out, and turns the lights on. There's a huge momma raccoon with two babies in the hole, snarling at her.

I was walking my dog at the time, and I see all the lights come on and a lot of yelling is coming from the house. She and her kid (the aunt was bedridden) come out the front door and tell me about the coons and the neighbor who was fixing the drywall comes over and he and I got some plywood I had and we screwed it to the studs and covered up the hole. Before we closed it up, I shined a flashlight up between the studs (2x8's, the A/C ducts ran though the wall) and Momma was right there, hissing like a snake! She and her kids went nuts up in the attic and made a huge mess of it up there. The critter guy came out the next day and caught the babies really quickly, but he finally took the panels out from under the roof, and mom came out in a hurry when he went up there and started banging around. His partner caught her and all three were taken to a nearby park and released. It took weeks to clean up the attic!

Sorry the update took so long. Ended up being a bat. We have no idea how it got in. They had a few people here checking the attic over and found no holes or gaps. It somehow worked itself down in the insulation all the way to the floor and could not get back out. Im just glad it is gone!

Bats are cool. Now get them a bat house.

Thanks for the update.
