Why couldn't I have thought of this?

I had to mail a package today, and inside the place, is this little "We sell your stuff on eBay" sign. This place will put your item on ebay for you, and charge you 35% of the final auction value. People were actually doing it. Amazing.
 
they have been doing on ebay forever... ebay even sponsered it for a while... but it got silly...

between ebay and paypal fees you are looking at .. what 20%... then these ppl get 35%... and it is not 4really even worth giving your stuff for other ppl to sell.
 
WTF, I noticed a sign for one of those things a few weeks ago by a nearby town. The place looked like crap, too. It's about as bad as those "perpetual garage sales"; for those who haven't had the distinct pleasure of living in such a junky state as IN, basically picture in your mind a yard covered with useless rusted s***, with a 600lb woman sitting at a table selling the stuff.
 
I have a friend that works for iSold it, which is basically a company that does that. I don't know how much they take though.

I plan on applying for a job there. Am I going to hell?

Maybe not quite that bad but I wouldn't expect the company to stay in business very long
 
Our local Circuit City offered that service for about 4 months, then pulled the plug. One of the employees there told me they only had two kinds of customers - people who brought in junk that wouldn't sell (or sold for a few bucks, not making it worth CC's time), or people who brought in decent stuff then went berzerk when they realized how little of the sale price they got to keep, and didn't come back.

Even though they clearly explained the commission and Ebay/Paypal fees, the people who are math-impaired didn't comprehend it until they saw the final paperwork.
 
I'll sell your stuff at a mere 20%. But I only want stuff that sells for a lot.
 
My uncle does this and is somewhat successful. He doesn't have a B&M storefront, but instead deals with resale shops and auctioneers who are looking for a quick turnaround on extra inventory or merchandise that would generally sell for more online. For example, collectible items such as coins, figurines, etc. that may not sell well when sitting in a resale shop have a large market on ebay. He doesn't charge 35% like the OP's example. He uses a sliding scale based on selling price; the higher it goes, the less he takes.
 
I thought of opening a store like this. But unfortunatley most people value what they have way higher than reality. Also if you factor in stolen goods, fakes, and dealing with the public it made it not worth it in my mind.
