Just got my wife the best birthday present I've ever gotten her. Spent more than I wanted but got a great deal I think. Here's what I got for a grand total of $945.69. I was planning on waiting on the telephoto lens for next Christmas or something but couldn't pass it up with $100 off if I got it at the same time as the d3200, the nikkor lenses don't look like they go on sale much.

That lens is a hell of a deal. But I wouldn't cheap out with a Transcend SD card and risk losing photos. Buy a name brand and just keep the Transcend for a spare. PNY and Sandisk cards are dirt cheap if you go to any big box electronics store.
 
I was going to pick up a 32gb Sandisk on Amazon until I saw it came with this one free, it actually had pretty good reviews on Amazon. I will probably pick up the 32gb Sandisk soon though.
 
I use 2 8gb and a 16gb Transcend SD cards in my Pentax K7. Through the past two years I have had absolutely no issues. In my opinion, you are only paying the extra $$ for the name 'sandisk', with hardly any difference in performance (if any at all).
 
I've only ever had problems with a Patriot LX class 10 sdhc card, and that might have been fixed when I formatted it with a dedicated sd formating tool (I dunno where the Patriot even is). My k100d [firmware updated to support SDHC] had problems reading it literally half the time.

Transcend is fine, apparently they're one of the bigger USB flash drive manufacturers too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcend. I think they even had some of the better class 6 (back before the good class 10s came out) cards out there, especially given performance/price.

I also had a problem with a Kingston class 4 microSDHC card performing poorly [taking 1-3 min to save a 400KB picture] in a phone before formatting it with the program.

Otherwise, using the camera/device itself to format the card usually suffices.

Of course you have had "absolutely no issues". With even the worst quality card, the chance of failure is low, so many many people will have no issues.

But when your card corrupts and you lose your photos, you will regret using a no-name card to save $2.

Well, your Sandisk can be susceptible to the same failure, can it not? A flash card is a flash card is a flash card... static electricity doesn't give a crap if it says Transcend or Sandisk. Besides, I limit my chance of losing pics by offloading whatever pics I take onto my PC daily. It's then backed up to two other locations within my home network. Other people should follow similar practices.
 
I run two 32 GB transcend cards on my DSLR, s95, and goPro without any problems. On the other hand, namebrand cards aren't that expensive, either.
 
The only card I've ever had fail me was a Sandisk. I've only used Kingston or Transcend since then, about 4 years ago. They did replace the card for free, but my vacation photos were already lost for that day.
Regardless, at the end of each day I copy everything over to my laptop just in case of failure or theft etc.
The OP seems kind of harsh on the wife, if she doesn't like it then eff her? Nice even if you were kidding.

PNY? really? that's about the last brand i would recommend.
 
Ok she LOVED the ultimate photo present. She charged the battery and is running around the house taking pictures of whatever she can, my poor old dog and spaz-tastic 5 year old. 1 gazillion brownie points for me until I fuck up then I'll go to negative 1 gazillion points in a hurry lol.

Bullshit. Transcend cards are fine and have been for long.
 
I just ordered a 50mm portrait lens. Bought the D40 with cheap 18-55. Later got the 55-200 with VR.
Knowing what I do now I wish I'd gotten a body, 18-135 VR, and 70-300 VR.

Also knowing what I do now: Several 2GB cards are better than a single large card. And unless you get an extended battery you will probably run out of juice before you fill up 32GB. You can buy special cases for multiple SD cards. Also, a stand-alone flash might seem like an unnecessary expense, but it really improves the quality of your shots, even outdoors.
Indoors: Learn how to bounce it from the ceiling.
 
Another positive review on Transcend cards. I've used them exclusively for over 5 years now and I've never had an issue. Now, my experiences have been with their CF cards, but I can't imagine why their SD cards would be any different. Transcend has a great reputation among the photographers I know; it's the casual hobbyists who seem the most wedded to SanDisk.

I hope she enjoyed it. I do want to point out that only having a 55-200 lens (equivalent to 83-300mm full frame) is going to be really frustrating and difficult to use for most normal stuff like indoor shots, groups of people, parties, tight quarters etc.

Most people have a lens that is more like the 18-55 or 18-135 that they consider a "walk around lens" and the focal lengths over about 70 or 80 are "telephoto" are best for distance work, or tight cropping.

Been three weeks, but just sayin'. 🙂
