There are times when you shouldn't pass a snow plow.

Saw that the other day, that is crazy. There are NO good times to pass a snow plow lol.

What sucks is there's really absolutely nothing else he could have done. Even if he was in a smaller vehicle, there is just no time to make a U turn in that situation.

He got really lucky that he could fit in that small area. Chances are there was lot of damage to both rigs though.

Did someone dub in new audio? That just sounds like laughably odd. Sounds kinda like something from Trailer Park Boys. But maybe that's just Canada for you.

U turn?

I wouldn't say there was nothing else he could have done. I might be wrong but it looked to me like he didn't even try to slow down until way too late, which he should have done as soon as he saw the vehicles. Maybe it looked like the truck was just behind the plow to him or something or he just assumed the dumbass in the other truck would stop being a dumbass and stop his pass attempt immediately and fall in line behind the plow.

Don't get me wrong it was definitely the other truck driver's fault. He had opportunity to stop trying to pass and get back behind the plow and waited until the last moment to do that as well. And obviously trying to pass on an incline starting from a slow speed, in the snow, between two curves is just...unfathomably stupid.

Or when the truck is taking his half in the middle and you are driving like a grandma about to get hit. That's a good time not to pass.

Slapping the anchors on hard in those conditions would be a good way to jack knife.

That scream though.

That's my point, he had time to just slow it down but waited until he was like a truck length away from the plow before he made any move to.

A fully loaded tractor trailer had no time at all to slow down on that hill, actually. Braking hard would have resulted in a 3 vehicle crash, imo.

I agree a hard brake would have made it worse, but again, that's my point, there was no need for hard braking if he just starts slowing down prior to that (my assumption is that from his viewpoint - which will look differently through a camera - it appeared that the other truck was behind the plow and not trying to pass it). I'm quite well aware how trucks handle/brake. Reaction time is everything as it helps the driver make a good decision instead of a poor one like slamming on the brakes.

He actually quite clearly does slow down noticeably when he gets quite a bit closer to the plow (~9 or 10 seconds). If he'd have started that ~4 seconds before then, they likely would have been able to maneuver enough to avoid what happened (it would have given the other truck enough time to back off and get behind the plow leaving the lane open). As it is the other truck actually did maneuver quite a bit and avoid a major collision (a comment allegedly from his wife claims he didn't even hit the other truck, which is likely due to him slowing down even as much as he did before going to the guard rail).

Like I said, he's not at fault, I think he deserves credit for slowing down and taking the guard rail (knowing that it could have sent him over it). I just think a bit better reaction to the situation could have improved the outcome. Personally I think semis should have technology to help drivers handle their limitations.

i know that camera position on the vehicle, and the field of view of a lens can change your perception compared to reality, but it appears to me that the camera truck was driving pretty fast for those conditions.

Drive is going WAY too fast for the conditions. Why doesn't he slow down AT ALL once he goes aroused the turn and sees the other vehicles (he had plenty of time).

Idiot

1) At first he probably thought the semi was behind the plow.
2) By the time he realized it wasn't, slamming on the brakes would have been a disaster.

He had nowhere to go, and there was no way he was stopping. He was screaming because of that drop-off on the right, which might not have looked like much to you all, but when you have 40k pounds or so behind you it looks a lot like dying.

Be careful making speed judgements from a youtube video.

The point is really to try and ID the driver illegally passing the plow, since he did not stop.

from the comments the other driver did not stop. I hope it costs him his license if they catch up to him.

I've had them try to pass me on the right, when I was plowing to the right. Doesn't work out too well for them. Especially if there is a steep bank to the right.
I've had them safely pass me on the left only to get in front of me and get stuck because the snow I was plowing was too deep for their vehicle. Or get in front of me and realize that the snow is too deep and then sheepishly fall back and stay behind me.

That's always safe and fun for the plow driver too.
The DOT guys here are great. If there is not much to plow they always grab a turnout. Class acts.
