There are so many young, opinionated people on here...

I've been to other forums and found them to be more civil, but on here the average age of the members must be pretty young. It seems that nearly every thread turns into a flame fest because some kid gets offended and goes off.

I'd be willing to bet that most (not all, but most) people on here are from 15-25. Hormones are raging, tempers are flaring, and everyone's trying to exercize their opinion, no matter how misguided and/or uninformed it is. College kids especially, they're coming into the "real world" and are trying to be heard, and are making waves(which is why you see so many college age kids that are protesters, such as the anti-war protesters and WTO protesters).

Can't conversations be kept civil? Or must everyone resort to name calling?

One of the most basic rules of debating is to attack the point, not the person making it.

I encourage people to try to step back, cool off, and be civil.

PS- please do not take offense and turn an pro-civility, anti-flame thread into a flamefest.

Go to FW and you'll see a flame-fest/ That's what happens when you mix hot deals, extremely greedy people, and an unregulated piss-poor forums.

The moderators here at AT do an incredible job, especially in Hot Deals and FS/FT. They are a little more lenient in Off-Topic which is kind of nice.

I thought the vast majority of message forum users were between the ages of 15 and 25..

People need to stop promoting their extremist views.

I'm an omnivore, I eat plants AND animals. If that bothers someone, too bad.

I just ate a cheesesteak, it was delicious.

Nobody is promoting their extremist views.. we are correcting the original poster. Your second comment was nothing but flamebait, get lost.

How about you get lost. I eat just like humans have always eaten, hence the canine teeth. What you are doing is unnatural. You're probably skinny as all hell.

Why does it concern you? You are not involved. Don't try to jump in here and be a hero.

I guess it depends which forums you go on.

If you go on a Honda Civic forum, I'd imagine that the demographic will be much younger than if you went on a Ferrari forum.

i agree with you. i havent been here long but since i got here the the progression of quality in threads has greatly deterioted. Maybe it's me :D

But seriously... all threads now are stupid YAGT crap.

For instance, take that "My mom thinks Nissan looks gay" thread. How the hell did that turn into a flame thread? It was definately the angst filled Starbucks yuppie (not naming names here) who had to blow it out of proportion and ruined it...

I'm not perfect and yes, I've done it before. But I do see that it's not a good thing to do and I so strive to keep my replies civil.

Please don't try to turn this thread into a flame fest since I was not flaming anyone and I request that they do not flame me. Thanks.

Funny, Im 28 and respect alot of things. I take things on here with a grain of salt. Its the internet for gods sake. I doubt I will meet most of the people on here but that doesnt mean i will bash everyone or just throw out random opinions. These is a spot for a voice on the internet. No matter what age, creed or religion. We use it as a voice. Whether it is a valuable voice or not is left up to you.

If you're so thinned skin, maybe this forum isn't for you.

But no matter where you go (unless it's to a board where they all share the exact same view), there's going to be arguing and flaming... and it has NOTHING to do with age (i use to regularly visit philosophical newsgroup, and there was just as much flaming going on there). It has to do with the anonymity of the web and the amount of users. ATOT just appears to have more flaming because of it's size... so there are more diversity of people here with different opinions.

People's lives suck so they go on the internet to feel big. They have this power since there are no reprocussions. Chances are, half the stuff you read on the internet about people telling other off is the complete opposite.

tarheelmm has a pretty good outlook on the entire thing. Many people should share in his views...

I come on here to chat with people that have simliar interests as me...and I do like a good debate...however sometimes falmewars do start, and that is when you back off...that being said I really dont know how you can come in and critisize everyone on here...taking the high ground does not allow you come in and say that everyone in here over reacts

I disagree. I think age has a lot to do with it.

You're trying to tell me that a 30 year old guy and a 15 year old boy are going to have the same temperament? You don't think that there's a maturity difference there?

Depends on the individual...but according to your logic, it doesn't matter :p

If someone gets offended by someone else's terminology, that's a problem that THEY have to deal with. You are in the minority and you can't expect to silence the majority.

So I'll say it- complaining like that is so gay.

i think there will be a vocabulary difference but i don't really expect there to be a huge maturity difference.

i'm 38, i get along real well with kids at our church that are in their teens.

i see many old old people that are crochety and cranky.

it's just temperment.
