There are a couple of hundred Americans named "Khaleesi" now

As I understand it, "Damien" was a very popular name shortly after "The Omen" was released.

Some people are sad, IMO.

I think it's bad to use fads as sources for names. It may be embarassing later on.

Anyway using khaleesi as a name instead of the actual name isn't so weird, Regina is a (rare) name too although it just means Queen.

True dat. BTW, I grew up in Regina. A friend of mine called its residents "flora". :p

Having a favorite character in this show is living dangerously, but naming your kid after one of them?

Wow what a rush.

LOL! What a stupid name...

I love Game of Thrones but really? Might as well name your kid Frodo.

It's actually just easy to get things recently heard stuck in your head when you are brainstorming on the same subject.

Which is to say, when you are thinking of names for a baby, some people are more easily influenced/biased toward a name they have seen or heard recently, especially if it was repeated often. Or it reminds them how much they always liked that name from before.

You could ask parents every year what they will name their next child, and it's basically guaranteed a majority will produce a different name each and every time, with some likely to have been influenced by popular media.

When you think of it, is it any stupider than naming your kids after angels, apostles, and other mythological characters.

Angels, apostles and other mythological characters have a longer shelf life. Many of them last thousands of years before being replaced by different mythological creatures, so kids stuck with the names won't be quite at noticeable. 15 years from now the only way Khaleesi can be anything other than an extinct, silly name is if GRRM still has not finished the series.

Which of course is a distinct possibility.

Yeah but those are usual names so they do not evoke anything anymore. Nobody even knows what all the saints did, and most don't care. It's just a name.

Also names of saints were names already before they became the name of a saint, originating from stuff about earlier mythology or even common words, created in the same way non-patronymic surnames were created later on (e.g. referring to physical characteristics). The moment of their invention is lost in prehistory. They are immortal names.

Fair enough.

at least they didn`t name their kid Bubba............

He could start his own shrimp business.

They were actually talking about this on the radio the other day come to think of it. People were calling in with the weirdest names they'd come across. One was a set of twins called Juan and Anadajuan. Another girl was named Female (pronounced fa-melle) because "that's the name the hospital gave her".

Those poor kids are going to take a lot of teasing, right up to the point they going on a mass killing spree.
