There a cable that does s-video/RCA/or component to VGA?

Have a 17" LCD with VGA input only. My Dish 811 receiver has RCA, s-video, component, and DVI out. I can't use DVI and component at the same time, bummer.

My main TV will run off a component output. I don't want to have to buy a tuner when I can just use one of the existing outputs and buy a cable.

So is there an svideo/rca/or component cable that converts to a VGA on the end to plug in a monitor? Not having much luck finding one.

You won't find a 'cable' or simple converter to do that. They're completely different video standards.

You can search for a 'transcoder' or 'vga box' that will do the conversion -- but they're not cheap (~$100 for the better ones, I think).

Vewsonic has the ns-5 or whatever the model number is. It's pretty inexpensive if you look around ~$50 on ebay. It has composite, s-video, and coaxial inputs and has a vga output.

Yeah, was afraid of that.

Already have the tuner, so an N5 wouldn't kinda be overkill.

Problem is that the durn Dish 811 won't output to DVI and component at the same time :(

If it would, it would be fine. How does it know which one to output to anyway? Just by which one is turned on?

Ug.

Well, I've not seen anything that isn't garbage that is under $50 if you want to do component to VGA, anyway. Don' t need to use the tuner function.

Not sure how it detects the video signal, I'd assume it would be a menu option.

I have found this

They say Svideo to VGA at one point, then VGA to Svideo at another. Have emailed them for clarification.

Looks like female Svideo

What would happen if I put a male svideo on my Dish 811, other male end on that thing, and then hooked it up to the monitor? Would be reversed...but does that mean it would work? Don't see why it would only work one way.

Then again I'm not a video engineer...

From their description:

VGA to SVIDEO + RCA Video Output. Used on some DELL Laptops and some other Laptops.
Clone of Dell Part P/N 080GWV
The Laptop must have NTSC Output Capability
Most Customers Need our Part 85502

This is some custom connector cable for a laptop that can output S-Video through its VGA port. Part 85502 is a VGA scan converter (a VGA->S-Video transcoder), and costs $84.00.

part 85502

There's just no 'easy' way to do this. I'm guessing the Dish box only has one digital encoder, which can be multiplexed to either the DVI or component output.

You could use a component splitter and get a component->VGA transcoder for the monitor...
