Theoretically, would this work? Ghost/RAID HD questions.

Before I do something, I try and research every angle...because something usually goes wrong.

I'm pondering a Raid 0 array. Thanks to all of you who helped me out with my questions. (and non-questions too )

I know that when creating a Raid array, all info on the drives is wiped. No prob.

I have a 20gigger in my Dell, that I was gonna format anyway. It's a 5400rpm drive.

Can I do the following?

1. Put 20gig, 5400 rpm HD into my current rig. Format it. Transfer all data (15 gigs) from my current 7200rpm HD to the 20 gig drive.

2. Create a Raid array (with my current 45 gig drive and another 45 gig drive)

3. Transfer all the data from the 20 gigger to the raid array.

WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS? This would include the OS (Win98SE) Would this be transparent? All my drivers and settings would transfer over, correct? Iv'e never done this before...does the speed diff b/t the raid array and the "cloned" drive matter at all? Thanks.

I honestly don't know if you can transfer an OS to another HD or not, but personally I would just back up any important information onto your 20GB disk and leave it to one side (literally out of your machine) while you reinstall on your new RAID array.

It took me 10 minutes to install Win98SE on my 60GXP RAID 0, once I finally figured out how to get round the Win98 Fdisk problem.

Nothing like a the speed of a fresh OS on RAID!

Yoshi..

I usually like to use a third party compy utility to make duplicates of hard drives. For instance Maxtor has MaxBlast Plus to help you do this and Western Digital has a similar utility as I am sure most of the major companies do. You can use this to make the copies you are interested in making from one harddisk to another. The nice thing about this is it makes an optical duplicate of your hard drive instead of just copying the files. This ensures that the new hard drive s/b bootable if the original is bootable.

Nelson,

I have the Maxtor Maxblast utility you're speaking of. Wouldn't Norton Ghost be better? I have it, but have never used it. Not yet, anyway...haven't had the need. Thanks.

I get no love? Has NE1 ghosted an image of one HD to another, then setup a RAID 0 array, then ghosted the image from the second HD to an already setup RAID 0 array? This would include the OS. I've already received one PM saying it can be done successfully. I'd like to hear more opinions before I "light the fuse".
