Definitively 100% reliable with a guaranteed 100% stopping rate / zero possibility of failure, malfunction, etc? That's impossible, and better than any firearm. I'd carry this magical device in a heartbeat.

Suppose you remove all guns for this magical device, then sure. But robbers are more often repeat offenders and nothing stops future crimes better than a few bullets to the head.

I'll keep my guns thank-you. For their mechanical beauty.

2nd... Not sure I'd want this new type of device used on me by a criminal.

3rd... This device is not a deterrent, potential death by firearm is.

4th... I'm sure a rapist would love this device... to use on their intended victims.

It is never as simple as it appears now is it?

Exactly what I was thinking. This device would be abused. Could you imagine going to a gas station and a person using it on the attendant to rob the store? Or going into a bank and shoot everyone inside with this device to get all of the money.

People will continue to break the law/do immoral things. The threat of deadly force being used against them is the biggest deterrent in my opinion. All living creatures have the desire and will to live. Anything that threatens that is the ultimate deterrent from a behavior.

So to answer your question, no I would not give up possessing guns for this device.

+1

It would likely increase crime. Because criminals would know that now I have a device that immobilizes my victim then I can rob, rape or kill if I want. And if I just rob then it would prob be only aggrivated assault not attempted murder if I get caught.

How about a chip in the brain that is implanted after a criminal is convicted of a violent crime, if it senses violent thoughts it disables the perp for 4 hours and calls the cops, and let make them shit their pants just for good measure.

Whats to stop a stun then kill? Could even be a really slow kill given the stun time. 😱

Are you guys ignoring the part of the question that specifies only the carrying of guns? I'd never give up my guns, but I'd choose to carry one of these magical stun weapons over my current gun of choice.

The question does not say that if you choose not to carry one, that it will not exist.

I'd carry that for defense, but I wouldn't give up guns for target shooting, or hunting. Also, a stun gun isn't that useful for a revolution which is one reason we have a second amendment.
Amen.
What general was that? Gates is coming to mind but I don't think that's right.

A "technological device" could not be 100% reliable. All I need to do is generate a moderately powerful EM pulse to make that 0% reliable.

A gun does not care about EM pulses.

4th... I'm sure a rapist would love this device... to use on their intended victims.

It would be labeled a rapists tool, and would end up being banned.

Just look a Rohypnol. The most effective sleeping pill gets banned because of a small amount of misuse. Now it's mislabeled as the date rape drug.

Don't worry, if your a rapist you can still get it illegally. However people who suffer from insomnia or other medical conditions who needed the drug, well government and politicians don't give a damn about them.

The point of the gun is to remove the threat, permanently. If this device is 100% reliable, 100% accurate, and 100% guaranteed to kill only intruders, I'd give up my gun in a heart beat. It's even better than a gun, because it will protect my property when I'm away.

When can I pick one up?

As far as a tool for personnal defense It sure would come in handy. It would be comforting to know that if you needed it you could use it without hesitation, because the outcome would not be fatal. The problem is it would be very difficult to prevent the use of it during a crime.

This is a theoretical question stolen from another forum that I think is very interesting.

A technological device has been created. This device is 100% reliable. It is much less expensive than a gun and does not need to be maintained like a gun does. It aims more accurately than a gun and 'shoots' faster than a gun. When the target is hit, they are paralyzed for a period of time. This period of time is plenty long to bring in police officers or whomever else needed. Let's say 4 hours, just to throw a number on it. The device will NOT kill anyone.

Would you give up carrying your gun for this device?

And could tell if it was used legally by it's registered owner? The Weapon Shops Of Isthar" a good Scifi read.

'give up'?
what is that supposed to mean? guns are personal property
it has nothing to do with their function
people have personal property rights and no commies are taking away our stuff

Theoretical question is stupid. No such device exists.

Even if it did, I wouldn't "give up" a gun because it would be zero fun at the shooting range. Heck why are you using the terminology "give up" anyway?
