Theiving HP & Preplanned obsolescence

Working on a PC for a friend of mine I discovered the Power Supply was shot. It was not a new PC but I have machine more than twice its age that work fine. Noen are HP's though.

This HP pavillion only 3 and ahlf years old has a proprietary powersupply in it. HP will not even make or order them any more. They did have a "universal replacement" part that costs more than have a new pc would cost. $167!!!!!!! for a cheapas low quality hunk of junk that should retail for $20 AT THE VERY MOST!!!! That does not include taxes shipping and handling.

The best recommendation is not to fall for those supposed deals and see a samll retailers who can put together a great deal for you with industry standard parts and usually go beyond the standard, canned, old, tired warranty, support and "customer satisfaction"

Me I don't sell nothing and do it for free but hate seeing people always ripped off.

This is an old story with many of the packaged systems from big vendors like HP/Compaq.

Meh, work on a ton of OEMs, not much to choose between usually, except the fact that you can get an AMD system from some of them including HP/Compaq, instead of being goat roped into buying Intel from Dell.

BTW, you are suggesting a mom&pop store for a system purchase to a vast horde of DIYers Also, most mom&pops aren't going to warranty back that system for any longer than a major OEM, and many charge way too much just for cracking it open too. In my area you'll be lucky if that little shop you bought from is even around in the 3.5 yrs that HP lasted.

As to the PSU problem, if the system meets their computing requirements still, then just hunt palces like e-bay, and/or google for the PSU you need.

Right Right, Completely Right.

But as the Boondock St against leacherous, gluttunous firms in training we can either glad and ourselves over technical issues, whats the use or actually walk up hill for a change and get some exercise in trying to tsake back the markets and buyers rights.

I do pit off all businesses against themselves and if they wonder why they are going out of business try and make sure the trade journals, periodicals and papers have enough information and feedback that they have no one to blame but themselves.

Sure some of these big businesses do seem to have good protection built in but if you ever buy somehting you haven' got a clue about of done reearch on ur getting it in the shorts as far as paying too much and subsidizing this 'service'. Beside Staples, Business Depot just turned off their "150% price gurantee". That's a big trend.

So in ordering somethig from anyone if they can't make the price point sorry, they either are trying to heap too much of a margine on me or have poor channels.

I am sure there are reasonble common grounds for moms and pops.

I've been recommening E-Machines at the lowere end since Gateway bought them. Walmart has a 3000 Semperon system complete with flat panel dispay for $500 bucks It's got integrated graphics but an open AGP slot. Pretty good price IMHO, couldn't build one for the money.
