Lets look at the paragraph which says:
"Today, computation overall is doing this. There’s not much work and play left that computers don’t handle. And so, the computer is splitting from its origins as a means of symbol manipulation for productive and creative ends, and becoming an activity in its own right. Today, people don’t seek out computers in order to get things done; they do the things that let them use computers."

Really ? The writer didn't see the NE v Pits game last night. Un programmable thing that was.

And he/she/it doesn't appreciate how much easier banking is on this computer which I have done for a while before computers and ssl were available. (Ditto a billion other things computers make easier). So not a persuasive article.

These highlighted points are incorrect as generalizations though there are people who mine crypto currency just because the computer lets them and play online games that computers invented. But again we have all played games and earned money all our lives from times way before computers.

But I admit loving the computer as consumer oriented technology, learning how the technology works and develops and serves my interests. Like TV, only interactive. Businesses are built entirely on them, so well done.

I used to read the Atlantic until I grew a mind of my own and realized it was an attempt to be a social version of The Economist which is known as a publication with easy three step solutions to world economic problems in this case social problems like discrimination , etc.
