So you're having a conversation with someone, friend, gf, wife, hubbie, boss, brother... Then their cell phone rings.

/RANT
Why do they always have to pick it up and make you wait while they figure out who called? Can't they just press the ignore or silence button on that thing and continue your conversation?

I just walk away now when that happens. They'll come find me later when they're done.

unless i need to take the call (or want to get out of the conversation), i ignore it.

I hate that too...if I'm in a situation where I'm talking to someone one-on-one I'll usually have my phone on vibrate. So if I get a call, I just reach into my pocket and silence the ringer and look at it later.

Phones NEVER take precedence over personal conversations, IMHO.

i work at the customer service desk at work and there's nothing i despise more than people talking on their cell phones. I have the tendency to "forget" about that customer until they hang up their call.

I always push the ignore button and it sends the caller to my voicemail if I am busy. Though if the caller ID says its someone that I am waiting for a call from, I'll exit my conversation and take it...

I simply don't answer the phone, even if I'm not talking to someone, but doing something else like driving. You indirectly pay for voice mail, so why not use it?

I hate cell phones. I never answer mine, and I wear headphones on the bus to block out everyone screaming into their phones.

you're just jealous that whoever is calling is apparently more important than whatever it is you were talking about. i figure anyone who has this problem probably talks too much.

That's what's nice about having an external display. My wife, "the cell phone maniac" (work related), can look down and see if she really needs to answer.

Yeah, I freakin' hate that. Personally, I just hit the silence button until I'm free, then return the call. AFAIK, most cell phones store the incoming phone numbers. Why people don't use it is beyond me.

Its more of a reaction than interest. Phone rings and some people just have to answer.

Its even happened in some business meetings. Then the person tells the other person they'll call back or leaves the room. So unprofessional.

if i'm in a conversation, i usually just quickly press ignore (i know where the button is so i can do this without looking).

the only exception is if i know i am waiting for a very important call, then i quickly glanced to the screen to see if it is the call that i am waiting for.

I usually turn mine off if it's ringing and I'm talking to somebody.

But I usually have it on vibrate anyways so I just ignore it..

I just bought a new cell phone today. My old phone's ringer scared the crapola out of me every time it rang because I had it on the loudest setting--if I had it on the 2nd loudest I couldn't hear it, and there was quite a jump of decibals so I had no choice. I like the silent feature but because my clothes don't really have pockets I couldn't feel the vibration. My new phone has a feature whereby if you get an incoming call, the display will show about 7 different colours. I like this a lot better while I search for a tolerable ring tone. I try not to answer my cell if I'm with other people, but depending on the situation I might have to take the call (eg. if I am expecting a call or it's my work).

Here's another problem. Just happened over the weekend:

The grocery clerk was about finished with checking out the person's stuff. Her cell rings. She picks up and yacks away. Now I have to wait while she tries to finish her conversation and write a check at the same time.

After what seems like forever, she finally gets frustrated and says "Let me call you back" then hangs. :|

My fiancee does this. I can't imagine why she doesn't think she can silence it and check it later.
