The Worst Day in Case Mod History

I have finally finished my first and last case modification! What I did was to add a 92 mm fan to sit behind my HD's to cool them as they had been getting quite warm to the touch. I am very worried about my two 45 GB 75GXP's as these drives have had many problems, so I thought cooling them might help.

Well, in all the project took about 10x longer than I had anticipated, cost much more than I thought, and ended up with two mangled traces on my motherboard and a slashed thumb. Luckily the two chopped traces have not seemed to cause any problems on the A7V133 and hopefully none will crop up. When I saw the hole saw get out of control and run head first into the side of my motherboard I was a little worried (putting it lightly). I was sure the MB was completely screwed, but it booted up just fine. The thumb on the other hand (actually, my right hand) will take many days to heal.

Oh and I should add that the fan and filter are sitting at a bit of angle (this was not intended), I had to cut a piece off of my front intake fan chamber because I mounted the new fan a few millimeters too low, I needed to make three trips to the hardware store, and my roomate's piece of crap rechargeable drill needed to be recharged after every five minutes of drilling.

In all it was the worst day I have spent on any project--anything that could have gone wrong did. Murphy was out to screw me today!:|

Umm.... should have taken everything out of the mb to do this..... Cutting metal results in lots of metal "slivers" remaining in the case.

Well I guess you already know this now but it's a really good idea to remove your motherboard (and everything else for that matter) before you start cutting. Do you really want little bits of metal flying around your case getting into who knows where?

P.S. Where did you find a hole saw that big that would fit a cordless drill? When I checked around all the 80mm+ hole saws I found needed a larger (1/2"?) drill.

P.S.S. Sorry to hear about the thumb but it'll grow back 🙂

No offense, but you did it to yourself... You should always remove all your stuff before cutting your case. And you should always do a good job of sizing up the situation before you start - measure twice, cut once. Oh, and use care when using power tools. Sounds like maybe you were just in a bit of a rush, doing something that you should really take the time to do right.

Hope your hand's okay... Hard drives aren't anything worth losing a digit over...

Yes, after ripping apart two traces I did end up taking everything out. Seeing as I thought it would be a simple procedure to cut a hole in the case, I tried to do it the easy way and not remove everything--this was a mistake.
