The world's first brain prosthesis.

If it works, this is going to be huge. Imagine interfacing your brain with a chip? Think of the potential.
Instant access to all the information out there. How about recording your feelings and thoughts, or interfacing a CPU to do math real fast. Or transplanting a brain onto a robot body?
Or interfacing a keyboard so you never have to type? Your brain will be upgradeable!

Wow! That's fascinating stuff.

If they do in fact manage to synthesize a hippocampus, all that shows is that we can use artificial materials to substitute for organic; i.e. a prosthetic arm.

It does not help us understand HOW the parts of the brain work.. as they said, since the hippocampus is the most ordered and structured part of the brain, protheses in other areas of the brain are a LONG way off until we can actually decipher the exact workings.

There is no question about that. We are very long ways from synthesising a brain or even a part of a brain, or from reading minds. But it's a start.

How about society where a chip is inserted when you are born to basically make you a slave to the state?
Once they can read or control your mind, you lost every ounce of privacy or freedom you ever had. It's all very dangerous. But scientifically speaking very exciting.
