I like surprise squash. I've had that a couple times when an animal helpfully planted it on my property. Otherwise, I'm partial to summer squash. Fried with green pepper, onion, and curry powder.

Winter squash tastes great, much easier to grow than summer squash, and best of all, it has so much nutritous value, it could be a staple food. It's pretty damn amazing what Nature provides.

Summer squash (zucchini) is very easy to grow. In fact if you can't grow it, then you shouldn't be allowed to have a vegetable garden. :p

However, winter squash is very tasty but takes quite a while to reach maturity.

Not really. Summer squash needs more water more frequently than winter squash. You don't need to water winter squash after it first blossoms. Also it is less attractive to pests. Summer squash is great but many casual gardeners prefer a low-maintenance plant and winter squash does that.
