The woes of using a backup computer.

Well, I got home from a vacation in Florida visitng my family. I let my brother borrow my main rig so he could play BF2. I am now using my dad's PII 233 with 192 MB of RAM. I wanted to copy my vacation pictures from my camera. Well front USB ports are so standard now, I almost forgot how annoying it is to plug USB devices in the back. (It's a Dell dimension V409) No firefox, and it is quite slow. On the plus side, Windows 2000 is a lot better than I remember.

Anyone have similar stories, or am I just a big whiner?

My brother has one, but his friend's is not capable of playing BF2. I am generous and see no reason to let someone borrow my PC to play some games, that is part of the reason I built it. It's no big deal, this computer does still do the essentials (email, pictures, light-duty browsing.)

parents have a gateway from 1997 or so. Intel 336 celeron processor with 64 meg of RAM. CD-ROM (not burner) and a zip drive and floppy drive. That's about all the thing has on it other than a few USB ports and Win 98. When i dont bring my rig home that's all I have at my disposal and it sucks.

Sometimes I just refuse to use it,

Naw. Actually I get that feeling anytime I am not on my main rig. When I go from my primary PC (X2 4400+, 4gb ram, 7800gtx, 2TB storage) to any of my other computers (most are AMD64 3400+'s w/ 2gb ram and 9800 pros) or my IBM T42 laptops (512mb ram) It feels a whole world slower and I can't stand it. My other pc's I use to run other OS's (solaris 10, a few distro's of linux), but now I just end up using virtual PC most of the time and running them on my main PC so I don't have to use those other computers.

Eh I don't have any backup PCs but if needed my servers could be used as backups. First backup would probably be my Dual PIII with SCSI RAID.

My backup is a P4 3.2C @ 3.6, 1GB RAM, 6800GT. OK, normally it has an 8500LE and is my HTPC\MCE machine but I have to use it while I RMA my X800GTO2 so I dropped in the 6800GT so I could actually play games.

Since everyone started posting their backup pc's:

My backup PC is a ghetto job running a watercooled TEC on it. It runs stock at around 13 degrees celcius. I have the 9600Pro (no pelt) overclocked and am fixing to start taking the Barton 2500+ as far as it will go. Using my backup pc is fun except that the 3 120mm Delta's putting out 152CFM's each to cool the radiators. It sounds like you are sticking your head inside a jet engine.

I don't, I just have tons of PCs so I don't really call any of them "backup PCs". I've got about 12 computers in my room with both of my laptops almost always working so the only way I couldn't get online is if tele lines were down, my cable was out and my cellphone was dead :p.

i took my "backup" computer with me to college because it can't play video games. i didn't want to play games because i didn't want to get sidetracked. that worked pretty well really.

edit: my backup computer is a 600mhz celeron, 256mb pc100, hp mobo, hp on board sound, intel on board video... yeah the works!!! a cd rom and a floppy. yep its pretty nice!!!!!

My backup is a 1.4ghz toshiba satellite with 128mb ram. My parents use a p3 800mhz and I think we have a busted ass pentium 200 somewhere in the closet w/ 98 loaded.

Hah, my backup is my iMac G5 1.8 gHz 17" ver1.
Well, not yet, it's still my only one.
As soon as my bday rolls around, my PC will be built by then. :D
(January 6th, if you're wondering...)
