The Witcher: questions regarding editions and mods

Greetings,

I am going to pick up The Witcher, finally. I wanted to discover the most inexpensive way of acquiring it without losing content. Please confirm or disprove my following statements as I am unsure which ones are false.

1. The Witcher vanilla can be turned into The Enhanced Edition via a freely available patch from the developer

2. The latest patch of the US version of The Witcher restores the censored content (bodily dismemberment, extra gore, violence, etc.), thus making it identical to The Witcher UK version.

In other words, can the cheap vanilla (non-enhanced edition) US version be made into the UK's Enhanced Edition (censor free) via official patches and mods without loss of content?


Also, any community made mods that I should be aware of before starting the game, aside from the mods that restore the gore?

1. Correct (although the "content" that you lose is a game guide, map of Temeria, "making of" video, and two soundtracks)

Also, Amazon has the original game for $16 if you're interested.
 
The Witcher has a really deep backstory, due in part to the game using the series of grim fantasy novels for its background. I am fairly picky about story, especially in fantasy games, and I was really pleased with The Witcher. I had the vanilla version and was able to download the extra content, with only a minor bit of trouble.

If you can handle subtitles, you might want to consider getting/using the Polish audio: I used it, and the vocal work is superior to the enhanced edition English, and far superior to the vanilla dialogue. I think the full download allows audio switching on the fly now. Worth checking out, if you can.

Can't suggest mods; all mine were from before the EE, so they may not be applicable anymore.

Oh, two of the novels the game is based on are now out, translated into English, and are a good read, imo.
 
Why don't you just pick up the UK EE edition in the first place and save yourself the trouble of modding and patching?

To save money,I actually had the The Witcher original version and it was pretty straightforward to patch and mod to the enhanced version,I finally finished replaying it as the enhanced version 🙂 ,very stable too.



 
Thanks for the insight guys. So the official patch that takes the US vanilla version to the Enhanced Edition does not require third-party mods to restore censored violence? Excellent...

The version on steam is now automatically the Enhanced Edition + Director's Cut.

As far as mods, I'm not terribly familiar, but I felt like I was stealing paying full price for the game it was so good. You will not be disappointed. A refreshing take on the RPG genre. The basis of novels helped quite a bit in fleshing out a complete world for the game to take place in.
 
Did they ever add the extra content that they were promising? The extra quests and such? I played the UK edition from release and loved the game the whole way through. Haven't heard much since then.

That reminds me, I need to go back and play the EE. Just too many games these days. I still wanna go back and replay ME, too. But now Dragon's Age is coming out .. yikes.

Yeah, the EE version has two new campaigns. I have only played a portion of one though, as I bought a new game at that time and started playing it instead.
