I have the full retail, and patched version of The Witcher. I go to play a short while ago and the DRM keeps telling me to insert the original disc. Nothing works! :| Now im going to have to reinstall. Im sure this is going to work well my save games (mostly through chapter 2). When will these idiot publishers *stop* punishing customers that *pay* for their product? If its not nearly 100% bug-free DRM dont force it on paying customers. Assholes.

Yes, we all hate DRM.

Problem is, no one has the guts to do anything about it. If you don't like DRM, then either A) Don't buy the game or B) Write the publisher/Developer via snail mail. Or, the third C) Learn to program and create you own titles.

Has DRM managed to make any title pirate-proof yet? I know that online authentication can prevent some multiplayer games from being played online by more than one copy, but that seems to be about it.

Sucks that the only people who get punished are those with legit copies.

Do you have virtual CD software installed or Process Explorer running? Both trigger at least some of the CD protection schemes.

And yes it stinks that those of us who buy games get punished while the p2p cracked copies work without even needing to insert a CD/DVD :|

No. That being the case, I don't see why anyone thinks there would be a huge surge in pirated games by removing DRM completely. Those that are buying legitimate copies will continue to do so because they could have just as easily downloaded a pirated version.

Stardock adopted that philosophy with Galactic Civilizations 2 and apparently made out just fine, considering they're releasing Sins of a Solar Empire in a few months. It looks like an awesome game - I hope they stay DRM-free.

I think Splinter Cell Chaos Theory took a year to crack (found out when I found out it had Starforce and wanted to get rid of it AFTER uninstalling game). Guess that's the benchmark...

It isn't hard to find it online (Gogamer) though.

This game drm screws up the game in ways like your character refuses to move , your screen goes black after cut scenes for 5mins.

Worst of all, it affects your ability to reproduce and you may go blind after repeated exposure
:Q

... oh wait ... . . . DRM :p

Let's be honest folks. These anti-piracy measure do not effect people who download hacked and cracked games. All these restrictive measures only effect people who actually pay for the game but they never ever effect software pirates. The more you treat paying customers like criminals the more you ensure the growth of the pirated software movement.

I don't buy games until there is a nocd crack for the game. If none appears, then I simply do not buy the game. The only exception is if the game has a linux version, then I always buy it.

Ok, sounds like consensus. :) I was just over at the witcher forums and there is a 16 page thread on this "insert original DVD" problem. The FUD is strong there. Work-arounds that dont work. Its really pretty sad. I sent an email to Atari requesting a refund and will send one to gogamer tomorrow. Given that there is no deterrent to piracy with this users should be outraged. Alcohol in the registry means youre a pirate? Oddly, i have nothing like that at all. The only "questionable" thing i use is process explorer, but its not running all the time and is not the source of this error. Here is the sequence that led to a launch of witcher tonight:

1) start -> programs -> witcher....nope
2) open tray -> close tray -> auto lauch -> witcher...nope
3) move disc from DVD ROM to DVD-RW tray -> auto lauch -> witcher...nope
4) reboot -> start -> programs -> witcher....nope
5) remove disc and close tray -> move disc from DVD RW to DVD ROM tray -> auto launch -> witcher...nope
6) retry #1...nope
7) retry #3...nope
8) remove disc from tray -> close -> open tray -> put disc back in -> close -> void auto launch -> start -> programs -> witcher...success!
9) :confused: :confused: :confused:

WTF? Nothing in my rig, SW/HW changed during this sequence of guesses. How does one figure this stuff out?

The ONLY time I have problems with DRM is when trying to install my legit games. I had to mess around with my hardware settings to get DiRT to install today :thumbsdown:

I had that problem once when my dvd drive died :) Took a few minutest to realize the reason it couldn't read the dvd was the drive was kaput (it was the laser not hte motor so the thing spun just fine :))

Well, if no one has any solution to this problem im sending the game back. Gogamer gave me the go ahead to return it opened. I also sent emails to Atari and Tages (and will send one to CD Projekt RED). If anyone else is having problems i would hope that you would express your dissatisfaction with Atari. Its a shame because this is a great game, but DRM does nothing to prevent piracy. As honest, paying gamers we should not have to put up with this. If its not a rootkit, then it doesnt work consistently. If Atari releases a DRM free version of the game i will likely purchase it again, but i cant spend as much time trying to get the game to launch as i do playing the damn thing. That is all...

Version 1.2 crack is not released until the end of January. Im also trying to make a point and hopefully get the message to publishers that DRM is completely pointless. :D

I have *never* used alcohol (the software, cant say the same for the real thing) or daemon tools. Ever. I mean never even installed or downloaded. The most "nefarious" software i have used is a BT client and Process Explorer. Neither of which should ever cause any problems or label me as a pirate (neither of which are running when i try to game either). What gave you the impression that i used daemon tools and alcohol?

Make sure you also register on the official witcher forums so you can post to express your issues with DRM. :)

Yea, i already have. There is a 17 page thread on this issue. I have a few posts in there. I feel sorry for the mod in that thread. Im also a long time member at Atari forums (CC only though, but im friends with mods there), i will go over to their Atari Witcher forums and see whats happening too. :evil:
