I still cannot get into The Witcher 1. I love Black Isle Studio / Obsidian and Bioware games (IIRC, the people who developed The Witcher are fans as well), but even after playing it for about three or four hours, it cannot hold my interest and I always just go back to playing community-made Neverwinter Nights modules.

I enjoyed The Witcher but it made me motion sick.

This one definitely looks much like the first.

The Witcher really does start slow, and stays that way somewhat throughout the entire game... but the core is enjoyable and fresh, and you get the impression that it almost, almost is a GREAT game.

It does help to have some graphic texture mods, too. :)

I can't wait for Witcher 2!

I've played a few hours of The Witcher, and I think it looks cool and I like the premise and the world and all, but the controls and the camera drive me up the Fing wall. I haven't yet mucked with the settings, but it feels incredibly clumsy to me.

Still will definitely have a look at Witcher 2 though.

Err, Diablo was nothing but clicks. Still sold millions. ;)

True. ;) I just don't think it suits this style of game. I wouldn't mind the combat as much if there were more spells, more ability upgrades, etc. Essentially, if I could run around clicking to fight AND start tossing around some Frozen Orbs / Meteors / arrow volleys / etc. I would feel much more satisfied. I don't think it works in the close-combat over the shoulder view style, though. :p

got to the second chapter of witcher, near the end (i think)...30-some hours, and I just got so bored. Haven't picked it up in 6 months.

End of the chapter? Thats a little less than half way to the end. Should be much more interesting once you're in Vizima and have to start making more decisions that matter.

Some of the animations in Witcher 2 may look a little rough, but remember, it is an alpha right now.

The Witcher remains one of my favorites. I loved the poker mini game, made some nice coin. Getting warmed up to The Witcher may be tough, especially with the clumsy controls, but what a role you play. Ass kicker , sign caster, gambler, fist fighter, medieval pimp, what more can you ask for?

Dark Hero FTW. Bring on Witcher 2..

Yes but in Diablo, and especially Diablo 2, you had like 20+ abilities that you could use any time in battle. In the Witcher you just keep doing the same 3 hit combo over and over again.

I couldn't get into the Witcher either. There is just way too much tediousness. Lame go fetch quests. Lots of backtracking previous areas. If they eliminated all this and made it so you could beat the whole game in half the time it would be an enjoyable game IMO.

And those same abilities in Diablo were all cast with the same click and you ended up spamming the same couple of abilities anyway.

The bolded statement is not something that any RPG should be attempting. Games are getting shorter and shorter as it is, and yet we end up paying more for them. Compare Torment to Mass Effect. Torment could take months to beat, and you'd still miss things. Mass Effect, while a fun game, was easily beatable in about 8 hours, with completing every available side quest. Switching classes in Torment resulted in a completely different game and experience. Switching classes in ME resulted in nearly the same game and experience.

When it came out that's how far I got, too. The ending of Chapter 1 was really good I though, and two startrd out OK (although the hardware requirements shoot up a lot and fps goes down-- and maybe that makes the experience less enjoyable).

But I quit and put it away for about a year, reading in the interim testimonials and reviews of how great it was.

When I came back and finished it, I was sold. It is one of the best RPGs of all time, especially in terms of setting and story and realism and maturity level.

Also of course what's great about it is that Bioware games are so Politically Correct it's stifling; Witcher is refreshingly phallocentric. J

I enjoyed the story, which is really all that kept me going. I found the game mechanics a bit lacking. Playing on medium difficulty I only got one upgraded steel sword and one special silver sword, when there are supposedly a few of each. I also failed to upgrade my armor. I was never able to afford the second level armor when it was around, and I beat chapter 5 without realizing it, which prevented me from finishing the quest armor. Also, what the hell is the point of getting fancy new armor when it's only usable for that one last epilogue chapter?
Basically, the story was good but I didn't really feel like my character got more powerful over time. I think this is partly due to the lack of emphasis on equipment (only a few potions seemed useful, and I never touched bombs/blade enhancements) and the limited combat options.

I'd be interested in the sequel just to see what happens, but if the game play doesn't change much I may just look up spoilers for the game after its release.
