Hi, I am trying to upgrade a laptop that came with XP home to XP pro. I popped the pro disk in, and up came the message saying that "The windows version already installed is newer than the one you are trying to install", and there's no option to proceed.

Any idea on how to get around, I don't want to do a clean install since this is a laptop with a large number different driver packages / auxiliary software already configured.

1. Why are you upgrading home to pro?
2. What service pack level is your home install and what service pack (if any) is included on your pro cd?

1) because homo can't log on to a domain. I ordered xp home to save money, as we already have 10 Pro licenses with the MS action pack

2) The dell laptop came with Home SP2, the XP pro disc from action pack does not specify service pack level... I will try to find out (edit: found it "This product includes Windows XP integrated with the SP1 files. ")

Or, format the laptop and do a clean install with your XP Pro disc. Dell gives you all the application CD's you need, anyway.
