The "Windows is starting up" dialog window

When ever I start my computer up and I get the "Windows is Starting up" box it takes 30 seconds to 1.5 minutes to fully load before I get the login box. Never did this before.

I have 3 different Anti Virus programs(norton 2005, Symantic Crop 2003, AVG) all with current updates. I also ran the bulletproof spyware scanner with current updates. My system is clean.

Is there any boot defrag procees that could be running? If yes how do I kill it?

I had a simular problem during shut down a few months ago. Would take several minutes to fully turn off. That was caused because the clear page file was enabled.

I never let anything run automatically.

I had AVG do it's thing.
Then I installed norton 2005(this caused more problems then it fixed)
Uninstalled Norton 2005
Installed Symantic Corp 2003 with latest defs.

System is clean(except the viruses that Norton 2005 invented)

Only one a/v program should load with windows as they tend to fight each other. Verify this however you can.

That said, a good program for checking out your startup files is "Startup Control Panel" by Mike Lin at http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml . It comes as a tiny stand alone program (my choice) or a Control Panel addition. It shows startup items from many sources (reg, autexec, so on) and allows you to selectively enable or disable each or any of them. It's a very useful tool for this problem and for cleaning up after programs or drivers that install unwanted "features" on your system.

This issue is getting the login dialog screen to load(which happens very slowly)

Once I get the login screen and enter in the username nad password my desktop loads as it should(no issues)

Your PC could be looking for drives which do not exist. Disable the ports (through system properties) that you don't use. It helped me.

Theres also msconfig.exe -- go figure its built in 🙂

Msconfig is useful too, but because it's built in many (Hotbar) malwares can disable it. Also Startup Control Panel pulls only the startup items from many sources including the registry. The tool is tiny, stand alone, and very useful.

What other "many sources" besides the registry are you referring to?

msconfig pulls from win.ini and system.ini along with all things in the startup folder. It has everything that other program has, although the other program does split them into HKLU and HKLM which is kinda nice. Regardless, though, both programs show you everything thats starting up
