Sure it could seem brutal at times when a half dozen people jump on a croc's back to subdue it, but they explained on the show why they had to capture them that way. Crocodiles can't handle any kind of sedatives and are easily killed by them, so the only way they can capture and subdue them is to physically immobilize them.
Steve was a genuine conservationist who really did a lot for animal rights and conservation, much of that didn't end up on his show since it isn't that entertaining. He did far more animals than the typical 'activist' who cuts a $100 check to PETA or Greenpeace and thinks that they saving the world.
