The whole spikey hair look that people seem to like

I've always had "long" hair (for a guy, I'm not talking pony tail, but I do have to spend some time combing it every morning)

Anyway everyone's always telling me I should get a different hair style. A lot of my friends have the typical "bart simpson" look when it comes to their hair, and Im wondering a couple o things

(a) what do you do to your hair to get it like that and how much work does it take every morning
(b) do you have to get your hair cut more often to maintain it

I could, of course, just ask my friends this. But then I would have to hear them go through the speil all over again about how I should change my hair.

I would post a pic of what I look like now, but ya'll would just laugh at me because I look like a cross between bill gates and satan. :D

Just got mine cut.

1/8th" on the sides/back
1/3" on the top

I have blond hair, so I use hair gel with a redish tint to keep the top looking wet and semi-spiked back.

nik (stupid female security guard won't leave me alone now :|)

<edit>

it doesn't take all that much to keep it. Takes almost no shampoo to completely lather my head like crazy. I never have to comb it because there's almost nothing to comb. I get it cut once ever two/three weeks now.

Ohh now I'm curious to see if you're not exaggerating... PICS!! I won't laugh, I promise! :D

It would also help to see what facial structure you have to see if that kind of haircut would befit you. That spikey look isn't for everyone, nor is the "Clooney" hair look, or long hair. It all depends. :)

a) Get a finger of gel and spread it around...done in 10 seconds.
b) It depends how *neat* you want it to look...but every 2 weeks - 2 months is a pretty reasonable range to cover what most guys do

I guess I kind of do that. Mine's more of a Brad Pitt sort of style. I towel dry it, put in a bit of gel ( not super stiff gel, but just to give some definition ) and randomly spike it. it works for me.

I usually switch my hair once a year. I'll go 6 months with short, spikey hair. Then, let it grow out for the next 6 months (long enough to tuck behind my ears). Been doing this for the last 5-6 years.

Anyways, it's really easy to setup, much less work than long hair. Just throw a big goop of gel into your hands and spike away. :) Takes maybe 5-10 seconds. You do have to get it cut more often though. About once a month. Sometimes I can drag it out to 1.5 to 2 months, but then it looks >way< too crazy when I spike it. :)

crew cut or buzz cut. Both acceptable and easy to maintain. The buzz cut you can even do yourself (might want to have someone around the first couple times to make sure you got it all). That's what I prefer.

I like to keep my hair nice and short, but one of my friends spikes his hair; he just puts a whole lotta gel in it and "pulls" it up into spikes. I've done it a few times and it only takes 5 minutes but a lot of gel (at least with my hair; it likes to fall over a lot)

I don't go for the spikey hair, but I do make the front of my hair kind of spiked. This is the way I do it:

1) Wet you hair (ie. comb it through)
2) Apply some gel to you hand and apply it to your head
3) use a hair dryer to shape it to the way you want.

u should just keep the hair u have. if u like ur style, just keep it instead of conforming to what other people tell u how to cut ur hair

Nah I agree my hair style sucks, I'm just too stubborn to admit it.

I would look pretty strange with spiked hair, considering I almost have problems sitting on it..
