The whole "cool cell phone" thing... I don't get it.

There's al lthese people with their "cool" phones, or women with thier "cute" phones. What the hell is the damn difference between them? From a practical perspective using my phone and my friends' phones, they're functionally nearly identical. They all store phone numbers, they all call people, they all send and recieve text messages. The only real significant difference I can see is that some phones can take pictures, and others can't. Other than that, some flip open and others dont, but so what? That's really entirely cosmetic. Also some are slightly larger or smaller than others and different colors, but so what? Is that what people are all excited abotu with thier phones, they're black instead of silver or vice versa?

So why do you wear new clothes? And why do you wash clothes, for that matter? Because of aesthetics - nearly everything is justified by aesthetics, and nothing else.

notfred i think youre right to a degree.... It's a complete waste for people to buy the latest and greatest phones when they dont use the features. but if you do it's worth every penny. I have a 3650, doubles as a camera, does bluetooth, doubles as a mobile harddrive and a mini video recorder.. but 99% of people buy new phones and all they do is call on it, should have saved the $$

I sure as hell do. If they had those as cell phones, I would totally have one just as a joke. Imagine seeing somebody yank that out of their backpack and start talking on it. It'd be awesome!

i don't get how you don't get it.

people like cool looking things.

what's so hard to understand?

i assume you like cool looking aspects of cars.

i think there's a deeper issue here.........😀 (i think someone made fun of notfred's ugly cell phone 😛)

Here's a phone for you.

My cell phone brings all 'da ho's to da yard,
and they're like, "It's better than yours"
Damn right, it's better than yours
I could ring you, but I'd have to charge.

haha, well said!

Same reason people buy different cars? They may all take you from point A to B, but there are some other features, better reception, looks, etc.

I understand that people like cool looking things, but all these phones I see are so similar. There's the standard "silver flip phone" model that a lot of people have. I guess there's about half a dozen manufacturers producing about 30 various models of this thing, but form more than about a foot away they all look the same. Then there's the Nokia phones, and the copies of those that all look pretty much the same from more than a foot away, except they come in different colors. It's not like cars. if you see a hot looking car going down the street, a lot of people will turn thier heads and say "wow, look at that". With the phones, you can barely tell one from another, so I don't see why people get excited about them.

Heh. I wanna kitbash a new candyphone with an old AMPS unit. Not quite that big, though. Just somthing that's bigger than my member.

retro cars, retro fashion, why not retro cell phones? could work.

America = choice

I just picked the free Kyocera 2325 from Verizon. As long as I get a good signal everywhere, I'm happy. I may splurge for a slider phone if VZW ever decides to pick it up... but it's not a necessity.

I don't get it either. Cell phones (on a properly managed plan 😉 ) are cheaper than home phones used to be, people. You don't look rich or cool with one. But if you think and act like your cell makes you look rich and cool, then it does make you look like an trashy idiot.

edit: the only thing I want my cell to do is reliably send and receive calls.... and store my numbers. That's it. The rest is just an unnecessary annoyance.

because they have become 'accessories' just like jewelry. It's one more thing to impress with.

People equate the latest/greatest phone to disposable income, the latest/cheapest or oldy phones to low income.

My wife works with a 18-mid 20's crowd in a club-wear store...phones are a big topic just like what kind of car and shoes.

I liked my 8260....dropped it and got a 6560 I plan on keeping until I break that or it doesn't work with whatever network I need.

Well... There's a big difference between clamshell design(flip phones) and other ones(like Nokia and Sony Ericsson) for me. With the latter I used forget to enable keylocks and call someone by accident frequently(while the phone's in my pocket). I don't have that problem with my LG(clamshell design). I'm undecided about the camera on phones. I think it's cool to be able to assign the callers' faces to the callerID screen, but it's not an option for me(work does not allow camera on site). It's not a necessity, but it's a cool feature.
