From ancient Rome and before comes the warning to "guard the guardians." Power corrupts and not to hold those in power to a higher standard of conduct is foolishness. Why is there such a call for teacher certification and none for the boys in blue?

Jon Stewart did a piece a year or whatever ago about how Fox News was making "War" on everything a thing. War on Christians, War on Christmas, War on etc.

It's a Faux News thing.

So what is the comparison of ~50 police officer deaths per year, vs mortality of other occupations?

Very low.

Not only that, but in the year of the 'war on cops' the rate of cops being murdered is actually a good bit below average.

It amazes me people don't bother to stop and ask those easy questions before buying into the 'war on cops' nonsense.

It's more than just a good bit below average. It is the second lowest rate ever since the 1850s. And there are a lot more cops now than there were in 1850, so it's a pretty damn good year.

Time and time again it has been shown the police do not want people who are too intelligent on their force, they use the excuse that they might get bored and leave, but the truth is they might question things that shouldn't be questioned instead of falling in line like the rest of the good police officers.

Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took the exam in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125. But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training.

I don't think many of these "too smart" people would leave after getting a taste of the pay and benefits of the police force.

It is a USA thing. War on Drugs, War on Poverty ect. Everything is a war. Then we wonder why our military is everywhere bombing nearly everyone.

Yet Americans are just to busy watching the Kardashians to give a dam that all of these wars on (insert war here) is just another way of lining the pocketbooks of those who push for said wars.

If by "a good bit below average" you mean on track to be the second lowest in US history, then you'd be correct.

OTOH, the best data I could find, which is the obviously on the very low side since tons of PDs don't report any numbers and those that do have no standard on reporting them so they get to massage the numbers anyway the see fit, is that LEOs have killed over 700 people this year so far. Again, with the only way to track most of the deaths is by literally going through half the countries local news I'd assume you can add another 20-25% to that number. Oh yeah, that number is just firearm related killings so things like the black guy choked to death for selling a cigarette or people being tazered 15 times till they die don't show up in those numbers.

Yet LEO, who will gladly put your life in danger to make themselves safer, are on track to have 35 murders this year out of roughly 1 million LEO with arrest capabilities. Dangerous job because people are shooting at you my ass.

There are more roofing deaths this year, an occupation with roughly 100K workers than there are on the job LEO deaths of any kind and the LEO deaths include 13 heart attacks. If a roofer has a heart attack it is not considered an on the job death. So LEO has about 1/10th the work related deaths than the guys that keep the rain out of your homes and buildings.

Except the "war on women" according to Fox there is no war on women and even suggesting one devalues the world "war" and is insulting to the troops.

I knew it was a low year, but I didn't know it was THAT low. It's wonderful news that so few police officers are getting killed, but yes that makes statements about the 'war on cops' that much shittier.

What's strange is that for some reason people (conservatives in particular) give cops leeway that they would NEVER give other public servants. Although I support public sector unions, one of the very valid criticisms of them is that they push really hard against accountability measures. Despite some qualms about how teachers are evaluated, I'm overall very happy that more stringent measures are being implemented nationwide.

Police officers, on the other hand, continue to enjoy almost no accountability for their actions (internal review!) and even modest pushes to make them more accountable is a 'war on cops'. Since when do conservatives like an unaccountable public union?

If people actually studied history, they would know that the period we are living in is about as far from war on police as it has ever been. Compare now to the prohibition era for instance. Now THAT was a war on cops!

Straight from someone in training to be a cop

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articl...out-the-war-on-cops-at-my-police-academy.html

I guess we shouldn't expect any meaningful change by cops in the near future if they keep teaching like this. I'd also expect more innocent people continuing to be shot and killed by cops because they are being taught about this mythical "war on cops"

The War on Cops is a grossly inaccurate response to recent police killings which are on track for another year that will rival the safest on record. Gunfire deaths by police officers are down 27 percent this year, according to the Officer Down memorial page, and police killings in general are at a 20-year low, given current numbers for 2015. Police deaths in Barack Obama’s presidency are lower than the past four administrations, going all the way back to Ronald Reagan’s presidency.

I wonder what our cop defenders say about this? New cops are being lied to, seems they should be upset about this.
