i plan to buy this laptop for my neice, i think its a great laptop for going off to college this spring for her, and would make an excellent christmas gift.

no she wont be playing bf2 or anything, i think its a good student laptop that also carries a warranty.

i guess i cant get a straight answer without justifying why im getting it.

just because she wont be playing BF2 doesn't mean that the parts wont fail because they are crap, also if walmart doesn't have a service plan, it will only be covered by manufacurer warrenty, which means possible shipping costs and going with out the unit for up to 2 months depending on what is wrong (again that is only harware issues) if the OS gets corrupted, can you make recovery disks? is there a recovery partition? or does it come with the sofware disks?

and im not trying to be mean, im just being blunt so there is no confusion

Walmart is taking a loss on these products. They sell these in hopes of drawing tons of people to their stores, who hopefully end up buying more stuff that Walmart does profit off of.

The build quality of the parts is not going to be crappy or anything (well, crappy beyond the normal HP/Compaq quality), but the parts themselves are not likely to be new. RAM will likely not be higher than PC2100. The hard drive will probably have a low RPM. The screen is going to be the lowest-resolution/contrast screen around. But that doesn't mean the thing is going to snap in half when you open it.

As much as Walmart wants to cut costs, HP/Compaq has a reputation to maintain (or regain).

dell small business sent out an email to me regarding an inspiron 2200 for $399, after a $100 mail in rebate. i thought this was a good deal because the 2200 comes with an 8-cell battery. also, when i went to screw around with the config, upgrade to 2 year warranty is free after $80 mail in rebate. if you do not mind rebates (dell and staples rebates are the only ones i do not mind), i think this dell would be much better then the walmart hp laptop.

edit - oh... and no need to camp for the dell laptop :p

edit - also, by default, the 2200 comes with a 14" xga screen. u can bump it to a 15" for $30... not bad.

edit - also... when i first went thru the config, i had to manually check off the free internal wireless nic.... just and heads up.

edit - FYI, this sale i am talkin about starts tomorrow. click here

I don't see a MIR for the 2200 at DELL SB..... There's a rebate section, but no rebates to pick from. Maybe they pulled it?

EDIT: Nevermind, I see it at Dell Home.

the walmart laptop is an HP 2300 series. It's a Sempron64, which should be a K8. If i remember the scanned ad right, it said 256mb ddr333 and a 60gb HD. Not sure what speed. I also think it said 15" screen.

no, buying used laptops is dumb indeed. its not easily repairable and laptops recieve far more wear in normal use than regular pc's.

how so? it's got a 2 year warranty (i could be wrong, but i think it said economy onsite), and there are parts galore all over ebay. i dont have much experience with hp laptops, so i can't really comment on those.

just checked... to be exact... the free (after rebate) warranty upgrade is:
"FREE Upgrade! 2 Year On-site Economy Plan after $79 Mail-in Rebate [add $79 or $2/month2]"

from the help link:
On-Site Economy Plan
-Limited Warranty3 covering most defects in materials and workmanship
-Basic phone technical support
-Online technical support
-Next-Business-Day On-Site Service2 if necessary following phone-based troubleshooting

when i applied at the geeksquad a while back the manager there said that tehy get dells more than any other brand, which led him to believe their service is crap or their tech's know nothing (and that HAS to be bad if the geek squad is the next best)

and as far as customers needing new mother boards, dell charges around 200 last time i heard

but my parents have a dell that i have been taking care of and its ran flawlessly for the past 2 years

im just saying their parts are more expensive than other brands

Bah... do you all think the dell is really that much better than the wakmart hp? I ask because they are charging $39 shipping, probably in part because they throw in an unwanted printer. But I work about 20 minutes from where these things are built. Maybe they have will-call.
