The poor old guy was in GREAT shape (@11 years old) until one day last Aug. I took him to work one day and in the middle of the afternoon he started limping out of the blue. I could see no damage, it didn't look like he had gotten hit by a car or anything, he just started favoring one leg. SO I decided to wait a day or so and see if it just went away on it's own. I didn't.

I took him to the Vet and they Xrayed his shoulder and said it was arthritis. Given his age, I could see this but I thought it was strange that it would just hit him so fast and so sever when he seems perfectly fine up to that point, but who am I to second guess someone who went to school for, what 10 years or so to learn to help critters. I started him on rymadal but it didn't seem to be helping him at all so after a month I took him back and had another Vet look at him, he said it looked like nerve damage and there was nothing they could do, but at least he wasn't in any pain.

Well that changed. After another few weeks I took him back and had ANOTHER Vet look at him. He agreed with the nerve damage prognosis and said there wasn't anything to be done.

After he started showing signs that he was in pain I started him back on rymadal again and it seemed to be helping. Then two weeks ago I was in refilling his prescription and the Vet (the second one that looked at Brutus) was going over his records and he said "Well I see here we Xrayed his right shoulder back in Aug,..."
(I'm standing there thinking WTF!!!!??, it's his LEFT SHOULDER that's messed UP!!)
At the time I didn't say anything since there were quite a few other customers in the Vet's office and I didn't want to undermine their faith in the clinic, but I did go back the next day and ask them about it. The vet that originally took the Xray said "Oh, we may have miss marked the Xray" "Either way, you can see the left shoulder in it as well and I still don't see any damage." I DID look at the Xray and you could see the left shoulder, although not in nearly as good a resolution as the right. And I told them that at this point, my main concern is that he isn't in pain.

Now over the last few days he seems to be hurting quite a lot at night, not being able to find a comfortable position in which to lay. :(

So today I took him back and the vet said that if he were his dog, he would have the leg taken off. :(

At this point it's pretty much useless anyway, all the muscle has gone away and it just hangs there.

Poor old dogie. :(

I'm would have taken him to another vet for a 2nd opinion when they screwed up on the x-ray. Seems odd them missed something as basic as scanning the correct shoulder.

Oh, Dave, I'm so sorry! I know Brutus is your best friend. :(

I think he'll still be a happy dog with three legs though - after a few days I bet he won't know it's missing and will go run and swim just like before. Next time you bring him up for a beach run and a walk at Pike Place I bet he'll even win some sympathy points and get to go in the ice cream places with us. :)

Yeah, he's my buddy for sure!

I'm really hoping he'll get over this, it's been breaking my heart...

I know its not much, but if you considered taking it to another vet and there was a misdiagnosis, at least you could get your money back for all the previous trips, maybe spend it to make him a little more comfy. A prosthetic leg or something?

If it is any consolation I had a three legged dog. She was a purebred show boxer who was born with a congenital defect in her lymph system of the right rear leg and it did not drain lymph fluid properly so it would swell up and have to be drained. The people who bred her brought her the to Vet school my brohter attended and she was his case. They tried all kinds of experimental surgeries to cure the problem to no avail. My brother's recommedation was amputation and the people said she was of no use with only three legs and to just put her down. My brother asked if he could have the dog and they consented. He amputated her leg and brought her home. He gave her to me. She was 10 months old. She lived to be 11 years old before complications in her stump forced me to have her put down. She was the best dog I have ever had. You dog will do fine without his leg if you choose to go that route. I am sorry you and your dog have to go through this.

A dog would not need a prosthetic - they can almost always get along fine on three legs.

My three legged dog was faster than all the 4 legged dogs in the neighborhood.

Thanks for the support.

I have seen other 3 legged dogs about so I have no doubt he'll get by without all four. Still bums me out though. :(

Sorry about your dog. When I saw the title I was worried that it was vaccine-related cancer in the rear leg, which is a bit more scary and not uncommon.

one of my family friends had a 3 legged dog run away from him (he owns a kennel)

let it run to its owner, like he normally did with that dog, and that day he took off runnin.
