Take 2 slices of rye bread (bakery preferred). Slather oodles of butter on one side of each slice. On the non butter sides pile on pastrami, swiss cheese on one slice and drained saurkraut and russian dressing on the other. Place in well buttered cast iron skillet, more butter the better. Place both sides butter down in skillet and heat very slowly. Lilke 10-15 minutes.
Close sandwhich and eat.

Yup! Absolutely correct! Simply delicious! I used to make sandwiches at a deli and would never get sick of Reubens. That's how we made them there, but with homemade Corned Beef (and a lot quicker than 10 minutes.) Yummy!

They GUARANTEE you can't finish it. Best sandwich experience EVER.

I can (and would love) to finish that! Where is this place? Maybe I'll check it out this weekend?

EDIT: I googled it and I know that place. I've never bothered to go in though. :)

They have 1lb of pistrami (their own recipe- they make in in New Jersey) on each sandwich. It's so big, the sandwich comes out on a dinner plate and there's no room for anything else. Their moto is "if you cleaned your plate, we didn't do our job right."

Seriously, I have never had pistrami that good. Their cheesecake is amazing as well.

what happens if i do finish it? because im pretty sure i could eat that

I think they bring you out more. I've eaten there twice and have a big appetitie- I could get 3/4 through at best. Pistrami is pretty rich. Plus they have side dishes that come with it.

I hate it when pastrami overpowers everything... I prefer equal parts

That is not a Reuben in the picture. It is a pastrami on rye.

I like equal parts pastrami to kraut. I'm not a fan of the mile high pastrami.

I also like turkey reubens. I also don't like the butter and I prefer the dressing on the side :) It's a fairly healthy sandwich this way, imo.

My parents moved away from the NYC area to go down south. One of the things they would talk about missing was a good reuben sandwich. I went to a great restaurant that is known for its reubens. The chef packaged all the ingredients separate for me and showed me exactly how he made them. I flew down to my parents and recreated the reubens for them. They were in heaven.

I also agree that I don't like too much meat. Anyone ever had Tongue sandwiches? Pretty good too. Tasted al ot like corned beef.

I could finish that.

 reubens. When I was a kid my grandfather would make them with homemade sauerkraut and fresh homemade rye bread. The corned beef came from a local butcher.
